I support issues such as anxiety, addictions, self-harming and Trauma, Depression, Parenting Concerns, Relationship Conflicts, gender and sexuality, and Self-Esteem….
Sometimes we experience changes or traumas that leave us struggling with the pressures of life, relationships, work, or studies. This can affect our self-esteem, our sense of identity, and our ability to cope. This can become overwhelming and may lead us to unhelpful or harmful thoughts and behaviours. With help, we can overcome our difficulties and learn to manage our emotions more effectively. With compassion, empathy, respect, and a safe space, we feel heard, considered, and valued. By understanding our thoughts and behaviours we can feel empowered to make positive changes that can lead us to fuller and more enjoyable lives.

If you're looking for therapy, it's likely that you're experiencing hurt and confusion around what's happening in your life. My first role as a therapist is to create a safe space through deep empathic listening, helping you to gain more and more clarity about what's going on for you. This clarity will then help you to define your goals and begin working towards achieving them, by becoming aware of your emotions, learning to work with them to figure out what you most deeply need, and then take actions to meet your needs.

I have a particular interest in working with people with relationship problems, including their relationship with their self and, with their own emotions and emotional regulation. This can manifest as social anxiety, with an underlying sense of not being good enough or being odd/not fitting in with other people and society’s expectations. If you struggle with your own identity - not knowing your own likes/dislikes/values (sometimes called codependency), then get in touch. We can explore together what gets in the way of you knowing (and accepting) the real you.

We all learn through our experiences, from our earliest interactions with the world and continue to develop throughout our lives. Our perceptions of ourselves shape our relationships with other people, the world, but most importantly, how we think and feel about ourselves. Our mental health is directly linked to these self-beliefs. Self-perceptions can be difficult and painful and we can often try to avoid them as they create doubts and insecurities in us. Therapy is a place where unpacking life experiences, and understanding their impact on us helps to achieve a more honest and happy understanding of ourselves.

Whether short- or long-term support is required, we are social beings and respond best to the security of a trusting relationship - I seek to start building that together immediately, regardless of the person or what they are bringing. When we feel safe from judgement, it is easier to access the answers to the questions that we seek, moving through challenges with more resilience and allowing us to tap into our innate intuition for guidance.

Sometimes choosing a therapist can feel overwhelming and despite the qualifications and experience it can be more about finding the right fit between yourself and your therapist.

Self-Harming Counsellors

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
