Sometimes things in life become hard and complicated and we have overwhelming feelings which lead to difficulties coping with these experiences. I am available to talk through the issues affecting individuals and help them look at ways to explore what they are experiencing and look at different ways to think, feel and behave through them. Things can change and life can be different, sometimes we need a helping hand. If you want someone to talk to or are looking to make changes in your life I will work alongside you to develop a relationship that will be positive and protected and support you with trust, sincerity and hope.

Individual & Couples Counselling & Clinical Supervision. “Life doesn’t get better by chance, it gets better by change”. At times we can all feel anxious or uncertain of our future. Sometimes we need to make changes in order to improve our situation. However, the prospect of change can feel overwhelming, leaving us feeling disconnected, isolated and lonely. Hearing your thoughts out loud, with a professional, can be an opportunity to gain some clarity and begin the process of change. I truly believe that a small change in the way we think can make a big difference to the way we feel.

You may be considering therapy to address specific difficulties such as depression, the impact of trauma, or difficulties in relationships with others, or you may have a wish for personal growth. Therapy recognises the importance of our experiences and our relationships or contact with others and our efforts to manage these. It offers the opportunity to gain an understanding of ourselves, of how we think, feel, behaviour & relate (including with ourselves) & consider change. After almost 30 years of working as a therapist in the NHS I moved into independent practice.

Are you in a relationship but feel that something isn't quite right: Maybe you argue a lot or don't really communicate anymore, intimacy has gone, you feel disconnected and wonder if this is all there is to it. Or are you struggling with a loss or a transition (moving to a new place, retirement, new baby...) and would like some support? Maybe you are no longer in a relationship and would like to work through a loss or an ending and take some time to reflect on what an authentic and meaningful life might look like for you. If this sounds like you, relationship counselling might help.

Counselling with me is a deeply personal experience which focusses on growing and healing from difficult experiences and encouraging transformative change. I usually find myself working with adults and young people who are going through or have gone through big life changes and it's rocked their sense of self. Maybe they have learned to cope or just get on with it, pushing down their emotions and are no longer able to manage the impact this is having on them and their life. Living life like this can feel stressful, upsetting, and full of tension while impacting so many things around them.

At times we can feel anxious, lost inside ourselves, shattered, fragmented and exhausted from trying to be strong. Maybe it's difficult for you to get your bearings and know your sense of direction. Or maybe you are seeking support to get through a particular life event such as a significant loss. Perhaps you are experiencing relationship difficulties, repeating old unhelpful patterns that leave you feeling bewildered. I believe that finding someone who genuinely wants to understand how you feel without judgement is a good place to start.

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
