My name is Dr Craig Mackay and I am a HCPC registered clinical psychologist. I have been passionate about psychology since I was younger as I have always been interested in individual differences and helping people to make sense of their difficulties. I am motivated by helping others to develop strategies to enable them to improve their quality of life. I do not see my clients as 'problems to be solved', rather difficult events can happen to us which affect our wellbeing. I provide a safe, compassionate and non judgemental space in order to help individual's who want to make meaningful changes in their lives.

Additional to BACP Counselling Psychotherapy, I am also a certified Mindfulness-based stress reduction trainer.
Are you feeling trapped, stuck and finding it difficult to get out of bed in the morning? The daily life feels tasteless and numb to you. You seem to remember who you used to be, but who you are, at this stage, uneasy, emotional, is very foreign to you. On the counselling journey with me, I will explore and assist you to trace down to the rootcauses of these symptoms (e.g. palpitations, panic, low mood, anger), and release the stuck parts in you from the past memories and present experiences.

The combination of CBT, Solution Focused Brief Therapy(SFBT), mindfulness and Neuro-linguistic Programming(NLP) provides a positive motivational approach with practical techniques to call upon in times of crises.
The most important aspect of success in counselling is the relationship between us. I tailor the approach to your needs in collaboration with you so that ultimately you can become your own therapist, by applying new skills and techniques to determine positive patterns of thinking and behaving. I understand that coming for therapy can be a bit scary or daunting, even if you have been before, meeting someone new can be challenging especially if you’re feeling vulnerable or out of sorts. Choosing to come for therapy is about caring for and prioritising your own needs, and allowing yourself time and space to think things through.

I offer a person centred approach which supports mindfulness alongside counselling and/or coaching techniques.
Hello and thank you for connecting with me. Are you fed up feeling fed up? I completely understand and am here to help. I support women who have issues with confidence and self-esteem. This may be because of challenging personal relationships, family issues, trauma, domestic or childhood abuse or just the many challenges life brings. Sometimes, we may be unsure why we feel the way we do, but have a strong sense that things could be brighter. Peeling back the layers of our lives takes great courage, but change is possible, indeed inevitable, when we take that leap of faith.

I am also an experienced MBSR Mindfulness Group & 1:1 teacher, specialising in depression, anxiety and stress.
Letting go is about learning how to take control, feel better and become more embodied. Change is not easy, but the sages, mystics and wise amongst us know that in order to move forward and live the best version of our lives we need to accept where we are and ask ourselves if this is ok or all we want. When we accept where we are, we can make the decisions necessary for that change we may feel is required. At that point we have already begun the process of Letting-go. It is also a point where you may decide to come & chat to me. ‘Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.’ (J. Baldwin)

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counsellors

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
