As a gay person with adhd and past difficulties with anxiety, I can empathise with feeling different from the people around you and the pressures it can bring.
With therapy, you get out what you put into the process. Beginning your therapy journey can be intimidating (I've been there myself in the past), but you can expect support and encouragement throughout. I never expect my clients to attempt anything that is unrealistic and in return I hope that they will try to push themselves to grow and heal. At the end of the day, therapy is two people sitting together and trying to figure it out.

Life is complex - as are we! It’s no surprise then that in our modern, frenetic world many of us may feel overwhelmed or less able to cope than ever before. Feelings of being ‘stuck’, distressed, anxious or unhappy can happen to anyone. If this sounds familiar, then perhaps it’s time for you to start prioritising your own emotional wellbeing.

Sometimes in life we can feel like something just isn't right, which can be troubling or upsetting, leaving us to feel lost. Speaking to a counsellor can help us to better understand these feelings. I appreciate that deciding to come along for counselling and which Therapist to choose can sometimes be a difficult decision to make, so let me tell you a little about myself. I am a Qualified Psychotherapist who works in an integrative way, very experienced in working with One to One Clients and with Groups, working with a wide range of issues including anxiety, anger, low mood, depression, low self-esteem, addiction and bereavement.

I have an interest in working with people with ADHD, whether this has been diagnosed or not.
I create a warm confidential environment where you feel safe to share what is going on for you. Together, we will work through the challenges that have brought you to therapy and create a plan that helps you reach your goals. I want to provide you with the tools to make the changes you want to see in yourself and your life. My mission is for you to leave therapy understanding yourself and what brings you joy and peace, and this will be at the centre of the work we do. I want to support you whether you are struggling with low self-esteem, low mood, or anxiety, to quiet that negative voice in your mind and live the life you want.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioural therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
