Hi my name is michelle and I am aware Choosing to start therapy can often feel daunting and terrifying.  I understand this journey, both from a personal and from a theoretical perspective. So, I just want to say thank you for putting yourself out there, even know you may have feelings of apprehension.

We all encounter times in our lives where we may feel anxious, sad, angry, or stuck in a pattern of unhelpful behaviour. This may impact our day to day lives, our relationship with ourselves and our relationship with others. We may know that something has to change, but not be entirely sure how to move forward. We may need some help. By offering a safe and impartial space I can help you.

My ideal client would be someone wanting to gain self-awareness and insight into themselves. A person who is ready to seek a space for exploration and wants to use it to find out who they are, not what society and other people are telling them they should be, but their authentic voice. The client would want to find greater freedom by exploring the life journey they have been on and what this has meant to them. It's not for me to tell the client what their goals are but for me to provide them with a therapeutic space so they can find out for themselves.

Therapy requires bravery, vulnerability, and self-love. Sometimes it is the hardest thing you will ever do in your life, but it can be the most rewarding. As a Cognitive behavioural psychotherapist I help people understand how the stories they have created about themselves impact their lives today, and what they can do to create a new story. The overall aim of therapy is to support you to explore your difficulties in a safe space and achieve the goals that you identify. My practice is centred on trust, empathy and empowerment.

I find the Person-Centred Approach fits my own philosophy as it has at its very core, an unshakable belief that all people are good. Person-Centred counselling believes that each and every person can, and will, become a more fully functioning person if given the correct conditions. The underpinning principles of the Person- Centred Approach are focused on the counsellor being honest, non-judgmental and fully accepting whilst being fully integrated in the relationship allowing the client to lead and set the pace. I aim to offer these conditions as best as I can during our relationship.

Self-Harming Counsellors

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
