Are you are here because you have important things to discuss but nowhere to express them? Does being you feel difficult? Do you long for connection but struggle with being in contact? Perhaps it is confusing to be asked how you are or what you need? Life may feel overwhelming just now? Do you struggle with belonging? Possibly everything changed around you and left you feeling lost and uncertain? You are not alone in these feelings and they don't have to define you. I offer you the space to speak out the thoughts and feelings that seem too much to talk to anyone about, you can say what you need to and be heard without judgement.

I want to offer you some encouragement as you scroll through this site looking for a counsellor - it is not easy to do when you're experiencing all sorts of complicated thoughts and emotions. You're here though. You're already doing something to help yourself, and my hope is that you'll find the support you need either with myself or another counsellor. I am qualified and experienced in holding and responding to complex experiences and emotions. However, equally important to the training and experience of a counsellor is how you feel in their presence.

With therapy, you get out what you put into the process. Beginning your therapy journey can be intimidating (I've been there myself in the past), but you can expect support and encouragement throughout. I never expect my clients to attempt anything that is unrealistic and in return I hope that they will try to push themselves to grow and heal. At the end of the day, therapy is two people sitting together and trying to figure it out.

I offer a safe space to talk about anything which may be of concern in your life, which we can then explore at your own pace, to make sense of things, resolve difficult feelings and make positive change. It can sometimes be difficult to talk to family and friends, and having someone to listen without judgement can make all the difference. Counselling can also help us to understand how the past has affected our present life and relationships, helping us to connect to who we really are and to be happier as our true self, which is our hu man birthright. Counselling can also enable a secure attachment which can help to heal past wounds.

Hi my name is Martin and my key belief is that the outdoor environment is healing and can add real depth to counselling sessions.I specialise in providing counselling sessions in the natural world. Our daily lives are often so busy that we don’t have a moment too think of the bigger picture. Counselling does not provide any magic wands. What counselling can do is offer a safe space in the storm where you can pause and really take stock of what is happening.

I have built up hundreds of hours in practice with people of all ages and backgrounds, helping them come to terms with a wide range of issues such as trauma, abuse, bereavement, relationship breakdown, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, isolation, body dysmorphia, self-harm, suicidal thoughts and sexual identity. Nature and my place in the environment have always been deeply important to me, and I am happy to consider outdoor and walking therapy. I also have a long-standing interest in existentialism, believing that we all have the capacity to create meaning and find peace within us, no matter how chaotic or painful life is.

The client needs to be heard. It’s not always about what the client says, it can sometimes be about what they don’t say. The client is the expert in their live and all I really do as a therapist is show empathy, compassion and hold a passion about sharing their journey and their insights. The needs and goals are there from the start and we work together to achieve them. The needs and goals can also change throughout because we’re hu man and things change and evolve.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
