I believe in having a holistic approach when referring to someone’s wellbeing and recognising each person as an individual. What helps one person may not help another. I do believe we all need a variety of good resources that we can turn to. These resources should be diverse enough for you to use wherever you are and whenever you need something. Whether you are struggling with trauma, bereavement, depression or existential difficulties, the biggest resource you have is truly knowing yourself and listening to your inner voice and developing a sense of peace within.

Much of what has hurt us in life has happened in relationships with others. I know too, that relationships can also be a source of healing and that a therapeutic relationship can offer a chance to have a different experience of what relationships can be. I offer you a space to explore any issues that are important, or are of concern to you. My own experiences of life, and my personal journey and development, has given me an insight into myself and others that allows me to work in a compassionate and non-judgemental way

Psychodynamic therapy focuses on both the past and present. The psychodynamic approach looks at how important the role of the unconscious and past experiences is on influencing our current behaviour. I believe therapy can reduce pain from past experiences if you are willing and ready to motivate change within yourself. Whether it's short-term or open-ended therapy you are looking for I can help you gain a greater sense of wellbeing. Giving yourself the time to come to counselling will bring greater self-awareness and with it the opportunity for personal development and lasting change in your life.

I work with many issues, but have particular experience with women and young people who have experienced domestic abuse and sexual abuse/ assault.
Receiving criticism and having conditions and opinions put on you, may prevent you from being your real self, impacting your confidence and self-belief. Carrying shame and guilt may mean you put yourself down and compare yourself to others. Not feeling good enough and unheard can be overwhelming, increasing anxiety and low mood. Counselling can help you process and move past unspoken experiences with issues of loss, abuse, confidence and relationships. It can support you to communicate your feelings more assertively, making your relationships more fulfilling. Encouraging self-kindness is sprinkled throughout my practice.

Many clients come to therapy with labels like "Depression", "Anxiety", "PTSD". But on their own these labels tells me very little about your issues, needs, or goals. You might be someone that needs a safe, non-judgmental environment to really be free to express yourself in a way you can't elsewhere. Maybe you don't even know how to begin exploring your emotions. It is all too common for us to get stuck in our emotions left over from something in the past, or use more "acceptable" ones to cover the most helpful ones. I'll help you pay closer attention to your emotions as they're experienced in session.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
