My name is Sophie and I am a fully qualified Person-Centred counsellor. I am patient, calm and friendly. I am also very down to earth and feedback I often receive from clients is that they find me very approachable and easy to talk to. I recognise that life can be hard sometimes and so, if you are going through a difficult time, then do reach out. I work in a non-directive way and this means that during our sessions, it will always be your choice to share as much or as little as you are ready to do.

I am an intuitive, caring and compassionate person; who can form relationships easily and make people feel valued, seen and heard. I worked for 12 years as a Royal Navy Welfare Worker supporting military personnel and their families in times of trauma and crisis. As military life is very transient, I had to learn how to adapt to and embrace change. I understand that not everyone enjoys change, however, just like the season, nothing stays the same. I can adapt to your needs for long or short-term sessions, working creatively, both online and face-to-face.

I understand that making the decision to engage in therapy can be a daunting one. I aim to provide a space where you feel safe, heard and valued. I place great emphasis on working collaboratively to understand a person's life experiences and how they have and continue to impact them. Our work together would be defined by your values and goals. The models of therapy that I draw on help to make sense of how patterns of being with yourself and others have developed, understanding these and then empathically challenging them to enable people to make meaningful sustained change in their lives.

Hello, there are many and varied reasons why people seek counselling or therapy with no problem being too big or too small. Modern day life can leave us struggling to balance work, family and relationships resulting in us experiencing feelings of failure, self doubt, low in confidence, feeling overwhelmed, confused, lost, defeated and burnt out. At times we can experience significant change and loss. We can be left with feelings of low mood and anxiety and struggle to make sense of our experience. Maybe we realise that difficult past events or life experiences continue to affect us.

I support people dealing with the effects of trauma, whether from childhood or adult experiences. They often face challenges like anxiety, depression, or difficulties in relationships due to their past. Their needs include a safe and understanding space to explore these issues, along with effective strategies to manage emotional distress. Their goals are to heal from their trauma, develop resilience, and enhance their overall well-being. They seek therapy to overcome their past, gain a deeper understanding of themselves, and build a life where they can thrive beyond their experiences.

Counselling can be really helpful when you just need someone to talk to and it can offer so much more. When you are feeling like something is just not right or life seems so challenging, talking to a Counsellor can make the difference. Many people just want to feel better and get a sense of relief from the turmoil of life. It may be that a life event has really impacted on you, such as a bereavement, trauma or loss of a job. You may feel like the world just does not understand you or perhaps you are struggling to come to terms with your sexuality. There are many many different reasons why people choose counselling. We're all unique.

Therapy can be transformative - so why struggle alone? Whether you are in deep emotional pain, anxious, stressed or perhaps frustrated with your life, exploring the issues in a safe setting can be empowering. In a world that can feel frantic yet lonely, it's hard to dedicate time to yourself. But you are important: you deserve an opportunity to reassess 'how you got here', to be more self-aware and find ways to be truly happy. I offer the chance to be really heard - with empathy and without judgement - in total confidence. We'll work together to understand what is troubling you at a depth, duration and pace that feel right to you.

Beginning counselling can be difficult and challenging, and choosing the right counsellor for you is an important step towards starting that process. Perhaps you are feeling depressed or anxious and cannot understand why, or maybe you’re finding relationships tough to navigate. Sometimes we are unable to understand the difficult feelings we are experiencing and that can feel overwhelming. People seek counselling for different reasons, and I am here to listen to you without judgement or agenda.

Your past is something you desperately want to forget. You have done your utmost to push it all out of your mind and just get on with your life. But no matter how hard you try, those awful thoughts and feelings follow you wherever you go, catching you out when you least expect it. You feel trapped, powerless to change any of this. You feel out of control, unable to manage the stress in your body. And every time those images pop into your mind, you feel ashamed and guilty. There is this voice inside you telling you you should have done something more, something else. Then it would have all been different.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).
Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?
Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
