Male Counselling in Queen's Quarter, Belfast
Hi, my name is Jim. I am an Integrative Counsellor and have worked in the area of health and social care for over 20 years, with the majority of that experience working with children, young people and adults that have experienced some form of trauma. Life can throw up challenges that are difficult to understand, accept or work through. I know through personal experience that difficult life events can leave us feeling confused and questioning our individual judgement. Professional support can help to work through difficult experiences, build confidence, make positive decisions and live a more fulfilled life.

I am a BABCP accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist trained in providing psychological assessments and tailored interventions for children, adolescents and adults. CBT helps to provide clients with a deeper understanding of difficult emotions which can be overwhelming and impact on day to day life. This is achieved by collaboratively exploring life events, patterns of thinking and examining behaviours which may intensify unwanted feelings. By learning to challenge unhelpful thinking and behaving, clients can begin to achieve their therapeutic goals and develop an understanding of how to address future difficulties.

Have you been struggling with how you feel? Maybe it is anxiety, depression, or a general emptiness in life. Would you like to better understand what is driving these feelings? Do you need the opportunity to be listened to, understood, and heard? We rarely get this in our lives, however counselling can provide this. Counselling creates a safe space where you will be able to share with me what is happening in your life. I can offer you a compassionate, attuned, and sensitive relationship where we can bring awareness to the source of these feelings. Through this awareness, understanding and acceptance, change happens.

How do you feel right now? Can you put a word to that feeling? Feelings can often go unchecked and we don't notice until we feel overwhelmed. In modern life we are constantly bombarded with information and feel pressure to make decisions. We anxiously think about the future and regretfully think of the past. Unable to find peace in the now. A therapist can act as a companion who can help you explore your feelings in a safe environment. Help you learn more about yourself. We all have aspects of our personality that we keep hidden from others and even ourselves. Together we can explore these aspects.

My name is Seán, and I am qualified counsellor currently registered with BACP. As I currently work in the charity sector, I have extensive experience working with a very broad spectrum of clients, of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds, sexualities, and gender expressions. As a result of this, I have sought additional training on many topics, such as domestic violence, trauma, and the LGBTQ+ experience in Northern Ireland. Additionally, in my recent education at Ulster University, I undertook some research into social anxiety, giving me a more specialist knowledge of that topic.

Male Counsellors
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
