As a dedicated and compassionate counsellor, I am committed to helping you navigate life's challenges and cultivate a deeper sense of self-awareness and personal growth. My approach is rooted in building a trusting and empathetic relationship with you, in the hope of providing a safe space for us to explore your emotions, beliefs, and thoughts. I believe a Counsellor can only take a client as far as they have gone themselves. I have experienced loss, grief, abandonment, rejection, doubt and fear. I have also stepped out ofmy comfort zone and embraced these emotions.Together we can work through your emotions to reach your true self

I am what is called an ‘integrative counsellor’. What this means is that I have trained in several therapeutic approaches so I can meet each individual clients needs. I understand how hard it can be to make that first step in asking for help. I will endeavour to create a safe and welcoming environment. I firmly believe you have the answers within yourself, its just sometimes we don’t get the time or space to figure them out, and sometimes we need someone who is on the outside looking in with a bit of perspective, knowledge or experience to just helping you join up the dots and find your own solutions or conclusions.

Working with carers of people with Dementia, I've understood first hand what it's like to have a lot on your plate - where there's conflicting responsibilities and you no longer have the time to be you.
I have supported people when things are feeling too much and are becoming overwhelming. Things we have to do can build up and up and it can feel like they are forming a brick wall that we need to find a way over. Do you feel this way? Is it a struggle to cope? Do you have racing thoughts, or thoughts that are so loud that you can't focus on anything else? Do you have so much to do that you don't know where to start and you just can't relax? Are you in a safe and supportive relationship now, and feel like hurtful or traumatic experiences from your past are getting in the way of day-to-day life or you fear conflict?

Everybody struggles sometimes and talking about whatever may be troubling us helps us to explore our inner feelings. However, considering counselling can feel a bit daunting. Often, we are so used to putting others before ourselves that it can almost feel selfish to take care of ourselves so we just try to 'get on with it'. It can be difficult to take that first step but I can provide a safe space where I will work compassionately with you to help explore whatever may be troubling you. It can be healing to speak to someone outside of your own circle who can be non judgemental and empathic.

Dementia Counsellors

Can dementia patients benefit from counselling?

Dementia patients can often benefit significantly from counselling. While neurologists typically treat dementia itself, counsellors provide crucial emotional support for patients and their families. Therapists specializing in dementia can help clients navigate aging, end-of-life issues, social isolation, sleep challenges, and grief. They can also assist clients in adapting to the disease by addressing caregiving concerns and supporting family members. Counsellors will often also collaborate with a patient's neurologist or other medical providers to manage dementia symptoms and medication needs.

How can you tell if someone has dementia or Alzheimer's?

To determine if someone has dementia or Alzheimer's disease, there are several signs and diagnostic methods that medical professionals use. Early signs of dementia often include memory loss, difficulty with problem-solving, and challenges in completing familiar tasks. Diagnosing dementia or Alzheimer's requires a comprehensive approach, as there is no single definitive test, and initial diagnosis can sometimes be difficult as symptoms tend to worsen progressively over time. To make a diagnosis, medical professionals typically use a combination of methods, including standardized questionnaires and cognitive tests to assess memory, attention, and problem-solving skills, psychiatric evaluations to understand mental health status, brain scans to look for physical changes in the brain, as well as other medical tests to rule out other conditions.

What are the first-line treatment options for Alzheimer’s disease?

There is no cure for Alzheimer's disease, but catching the disease in its early-to-moderate phases can be beneficial in order to initiate first-line treatments to help manage symptoms. Medications such as galantamine, rivastigmine, and donepezil are examples of cholinesterase inhibitors that are commonly prescribed for Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, working with a therapist or social worker can also often help patients with the disease address common behavioural and lifestyle concerns, such as anxiety, depression, irritability, sleep problems, social support, and housing changes.

When to seek treatment for Alzheimer’s?

It’s best to seek treatment at the first signs of Alzheimer's. Early warning signs of Alzheimer’s include memory problems, such as forgetting appointments or directions, as well as trouble concentrating, paying attention, retrieving words, and carrying out daily household tasks. An early diagnosis can help people slow the progression of the disease with medication and plan for the future in terms of housing, social/caregiving support, and finances.
