It can be hard to reach out for therapy. I wonder whether you are here because you are feeling stuck and are finding it hard to see a way forward? Or there things you are holding onto that feel heavy? I can help you make sense of the difficulties you experience and issues that are impacting your life. Some of these difficulties may involve low mood, low self-esteem, grief and loss, stressful life transitions, traumatic experiences, anxiety problems, phobias, relationship difficulties or unusual experiences. I offer a warm and dependable safe space to work through your concerns.

I know how it feels to lose trust in your inner voice, and I believe passionately that Person-Centred Counselling can be a powerful support to gain back that trust. Perhaps you need help to make sense of the way you were parented. Perhaps you are still struggling with the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences. Perhaps you have experienced an abusive or toxic relationship, domestic abuse, or major life event that felt like it pulled the rug from under you. Perhaps someone in your life has strong narcissistic traits that have adversely affected you. Perhaps there are a combination of factors that bring you to consider counselling.

Are you in emotional pain, feeling alienated or dislocated from other people? Do you feel stuck or wish that you could have more satisfying, less stressful relationships? Perhaps your fears and worries prevent you from realising your potential. I work alongside people to help understand the reasons behind such thoughts and feelings. In coming to understand the patterns of your life, and the confusing and painful feelings that accompany them, you can begin to make consciously informed choices about how to live. This leads to a more authentic and less critical experience of yourself, opening the way for greater enjoyment in life.

Hi, I’m Tom, I’m an accredited CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) Therapist. I live and work in Cornwall offering face to face sessions in this area as well as working remotely throughout the UK. At one time or another, we all need help to examine patterns or behaviours that we would like to change. You may be struggling with your emotions, feeling anxious, depressed and overwhelmed. You may have difficulties in your relationships or feel that you need to process painful experiences from your past. Together we can explore the difficulties you are having and begin to make sense of your experiences at a pace that feels right for you. Starting psychotherapy - especially for the first time - takes courage, but the rewards of self-exploration can be immeasurable.

The ideal client in therapy for me would be someone who is motivated or has hope to change and willing to do the work to make positive changes in their life. My client could be struggling with issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, and many other mental health difficulties but would be committed to addressing these issues and finding healthier ways of coping or be open to make a little change in their life. Their goals would be to develop self-awareness, improve their mental and emotional well-being and build stronger connections with themselves and others.

As a man you may be experiencing confusion, stress or despair around your role and how to meet new expectations of emotional openness. Perhaps it feels like no one understands you and how hard you try to be a good person. Maybe you want to be less stressed and angry, enjoy some inner peace, and rekindle your spark for life again which was sucked out of you a long time ago. Perhaps you feel fear, shame or isolation, and just want to be confident and self-assured again. Or you may be a woman seeking to understand the behaviour of important men in your life.

I have provided a therapeutic space for adults of all ages across NHS, charity, community, and private settings since completing doctorate level training in 2006. I have supported individuals facing significant life challenges, offering a relationship in which experiences have been shared, clarified, and understood, and where the holistic impact of those experiences on all parts of the person, and their external connections, has been acknowledged. I work collaboratively with all clients to establish therapeutic aims and suitable approaches to enable the reduction of distress and identify actions to re-establish ownership in living.

Therapy is a journey of change, in a supportive, confidential, non-judgemental environment, empowering you to find your own voice, confidence, knowledge and awareness. Reconnecting with these enables you to move forward. Allow yourself regular time in a peaceful space away from the demands of life to talk in private with someone who is objective and impartial. As an integrative psychotherapist you are the complete focus, I use a flexible approach to fit your needs. I work with all ages & specialise in Trauma work ( past or present, complex or PTSD).

We have all known times in our lives when we needed support from others. Research has shown that it can help to talk through our concerns, particularly when they don't seem to resolve themselves and at times seem to get louder in our heads. Allowing someone else to see your life through their eyes, uncluttered by negative perceptions, empathising with you and celebrating who you are, can have transformative therapeutic effects. Therapy can give people choices as to new ways forward, feeling more in control of their lives through a developed self awareness, enabling a person or couple to work on a plan B.

Sifting through at your own pace, looking curiously at your 'stuff'. Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
