I run a small private practice alongside my NHS work, offering longer term weekly psychotherapy. There is no specific list of difficulties people come with. Distress can express itself in our lives many ways, through our bodies, minds, feelings, relationships (or lack of) or in illness. I work with people who feel they would benefit from developing a better understanding of their patterns of relating to themselves and others.
As part of the conversation it can be helpful to consider how your developmental experiences may have contributed to these patterns. So too is a willingness to engage gently with the painful and unacknowledged parts of our experience, which may lead, in the end, to a kinder way of relating to yourself and others.
My approach is integrative, meaning that I draw flexibly on different therapy approaches, but aligns most closely with psychodynamic principles. It is also important to bear in mind the cultural aspects of our experience, including the intersection of race, gender and sexuality.
