As a Muslim, I embrace diversity and welcome individuals of all religious and non-religious backgrounds.
In life’s ever-changing phases, therapy can provide a sanctuary to navigate and understand the impact of your experiences, emotions, and thoughts. Seeking a therapist is often the first step towards finding the support that you need. I strive to create a warm and compassionate space for us to explore how you relate to yourself, others, and the world. Whether you are experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship issues, bereavement, abuse, trauma, and other life challenges, including feelings of shame or self-blame.

I’m here to start your healing journey with you. This is your safe space, where you can explore the pain and trauma that you’ve held with you for however long. I can imagine the thought of sharing this with somebody new is daunting and maybe even scary for some .. but that’s okay. Trust the process and allow yourself to be in this journey together. For my Muslim clients, I may combine elements of an Islamic model for therapy which solidifies the therapeutic relationship.

Hi there! I’m Aneela. Life can be difficult, busy, and messy, which is why we all need support from time to time to deal with it. Our emotional health is an important part of our overall health, so when that is affected other areas of our lives are also. It affects how we feel about ourselves, others, and the world around us - so I'm glad you've stopped by. Therapy can give you power over your circumstances rather than them having power over you. Therapy can be an important part of taking care of ourselves, so we are better able to understand what’s going on for us. I would love to be a helping hand in this process for you.

Sometimes life can be confusing and lonely, even when surrounded by others. It can be really helpful to talk things through with someone who isn't emotionally involved in your life to see things in a different light. Often our childhood and past history can link to the relationships we have now and how we manage them. By exploring this together I can help you gain an understanding towards your relationships with others. and yourself. Having worked with children in an SEMH setting I also have a good understanding of how impactful it can be for them and their families in home/school environment.

Finding a therapist can feel like a minefield. Ultimately you probably want to find someone to talk to that you feel comfortable with, and who can of course help. I understand how confusing and nerve-wracking it can be to consider therapy and take the first step. I provide clients with a supportive space in which to unpack their challenges. I will help you to get a better handle on what is happening for you. I have experience of working with anxiety, depression, significant loss and bereavement, childhood and midlife trauma, as well as difficulty understanding feelings.

I see therapy as a team work to go on an adventure: step into the unknown of your being! My approach is Holistic and Integrative. Holistic means that we work with different layers of your being: your physical, mental, emotional and energetical bodies. If you’re open to, we will work with breath, mindfulness, chakras, energy blocks and dreams. I have seen over and over that the process of healing is quicker when we both go beyond our minds and work with all of us. Working Integratively means that I have a tool box of different approaches and I use the one which is suitable to you at the right time.

Muslim Counsellors

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

A culturally sensitive therapist will be respectful of faith, race, sexual orientation, gender, age, disabilities, or anything that is relevant to an individual’s reasons for seeking therapy. This mental health practitioner will therefore be able to recognize the role of faith in a client’s life, and they can appreciate the cultural values and beliefs of others. Cultural sensitivity on the part of the therapist may enhance the possibility of a strong therapeutic bond, even if the clinician does not have an extensive understanding of a client’s background before therapy begins.

How might I inquire about a therapist's experience with Muslim clients?

It is best to ask directly whether a therapist has worked with Muslim clients, and if so, the extent to which cultural or religious principles factored into their work together. You can also ask whether a therapist who is familiar with Islamic practices, values, and beliefs incorporates them into their professional work, and if so, how. If the therapist does not have a sufficient knowledge base, they may well know and can refer you to someone who has such experience.

What if the therapist does not have my exact background?

It is not necessary for a therapist to share one’s exact religious background for therapy to be successful. A qualified and culturally sensitive therapist will appreciate diversity within the Muslim community as well as diversity overall, and will have a sense of how religious and cultural issues can contribute to mental health. In addition, a good therapist would be willing to learn from their clients.

How do I recognise an effective Muslim therapist?

Like all therapists, a Muslim therapist who is effective will have the requisite training and expertise in evidence-based techniques, as well as the ability to connect with you on a personal level. An effective Muslim therapist may also demonstrate a clear understanding of your cultural background and faith. A therapist with such cultural sensitivity will set the stage for a strong therapeutic alliance.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of the Muslim faith?

The directory of Muslim therapists includes mental health providers who have shared their cultural background in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist with a similar background. However, not all therapists choose to disclose this information, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. When the number of therapists identified as Muslim is limited, the directory will also show therapists with extensive experience working with clients from relevant backgrounds.
