I am trained in integrative psychotherapeutic counselling, which provided me with a foundational set of skills in person-centred counselling, psychodynamic psychotherapy, Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Existential psychotherapy. I use elements from all four disciplines, and have since completed a course in Dialetical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). I favour Existential psychotherapy but apply elements of CBT as a means of practicing behavioural changes.

Sometimes we feel overwhelmed by life, feelings of anxiety and depression disrupting our wellbeing, making us feel less than acceptable to ourselves and others. Difficult or traumatising experiences in the past can leave us feeling stuck, alone, fearful or angry. We might be stuck in a flight/flight/freeze response blighting our ability to be in the present moment unable to lean into the people in our lives. Safely speak your truth, express you deepest feelings, learn about yourself in a safe therapeutic space where you could explore these experiences transmut trauma into wisdom and become nearer to being your best self.

Sometimes we all find ourselves facing situations or challenges in life, which we find distressing or feel unable to cope with. Counselling can make a real difference to how we think and feel about things and can help us to make the changes we want, for a happier life. I offer deep level support to facilitate change and self sustaining mental health. I use varying skills and concepts depending on what is suitable for each need or individual. I believe that the most important element to therapy is the relationship and trust that is built.

It is not at all unusual for any of us to experience a sense of anxiety or depression due to a life event that has caused us to feel “disconnected,” or simply “overwhelmed.” We might experience a bereavement or loss (a job, a relationship, a marriage); or issues may arise related to dating, getting married, or ageing and retirement. Alternatively, we might feel unable to be “ourselves,” or have the desire to nurture other aspects of our personality that seem underdeveloped: a lack of confidence to take risks and engage life, an ability to slow down, or an ability to be honest about our feelings with others. Psyhotherapy can help.

We might all experience times in our life when we're struggling to cope, and when we do, talking our problems through with someone who understands us can be just the thing that lifts the weight from our shoulders and allows us to find a new path forward. Although I try to shy away from labels and diagnosis, I've helped people suffering from anxiety, depression, grief, relationship and anger management issues, and more. It's vital that you feel comfortable talking to your counsellor, and so I offer a half price first session to help you decide if I'm the right person for you.

Clients come with diverse problems and needs. What matters to my clients, matters to me. Generally, I have found problems which manifest in current life relationships (romantic, family, work, with services or with ourself) but which originate in our past experiences are those which can be worked on helpfully using the ways I work. A measure of openness to explore other perspectives and to really think about describing issues is very important as is a commitment to think outside sessions about things that may be the causes of distress.

Hello and welcome! My name is Alex and I offer in-person sessions in Reading (town centre), or online via zoom. I am a fully qualified, BACP-registered, counsellor with a proven track record of helping people work through all kinds of problems. I think that part of the problem we all share is that we grew up in a society that didn't really understand human emotions. Thus, we quickly learned that emotions are a problem and that the only proper way of dealing with them is to shut them off, brush them under the carpet and put on a brave face.

You may be suffering with feelings of stress, anxiety, or depression; or emotions which gush out disproportionately to what seems to have triggered them; struggling in relationships which cause you distress; or recent events may have brought to the surface painful feelings which seem hard to manage or which feel confusing. Whatever is troubling you, I offer a safe space to explore and work through it together. For me psychotherapy is not only for those with a diagnosable psychological issue, or for someone who can be labelled as having something 'wrong' with them, it can benefit anyone who wants to get more out of life.

Male Counsellors
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
