Starting the process of therapy can be life changing but it’s not easy and choosing the right therapist is key, to help this transformative work happen. I’m a caring and attentive therapist who works with adults and adolescents struggling with anxiety, grief or loss, low self-esteem, eating disorders and trauma caused by difficult experiences in their life, that may be impacting the way they feel and preventing them from the living the way they would like to. Working together to foster trust, self-esteem and strengthen their ability to cope with challenges, helping them to feel more like themselves and back in control of their life.

Therapy offers insight and understanding helping you work towards an awareness of the self. It gives the opportunity to discover inbuilt defence mechanisms that perhaps no longer serve the person you have become as a result of the traumas we all experience in life. Counselling can be a quiet, safe space to breathe and think about your life. Who you are, where you are going and what you wish to gain. It can be a space to grieve the losses you have experienced in your life and the changes that happen throughout your life.

I believe we are all products of our upbringing and experiences. Sometimes, this can lead to struggling with anxiety, low self esteem, confusion and not feeling good in relationships. I can work with you to unravel what this is all about and help you find new ways of coping and moving forwards. We can talk or use creative methods to facilitate this discovery process. I work with young people, adults and couples for short or long term one to one sessions which are all driven by you and on your terms. I offer a free, initial meeting so you can decide if I am the right Counsellor for you. I also offer clinical supervision.

Internal Family Systems is the fundamental psychotherapeutic approach that helps people deal with the legacy of trauma. We will work collaboratively, understanding what is being brought to the room and making sense of it together in an environment of safety and respect. I hope that our time together will deepen your self awareness and capacity for a fuller sense of you. Through expanding and deepening your understanding of yourself, compassion and perspectives can broaden- loosening the bolts on personal narratives or beliefs and creating room and opportunities for a different experience.

My clients are at the heart of every session, creating a welcoming, safe and relaxed atmosphere where communication can flow freely and openly. The most important thing is that you are comfortable, at ease and feel able to talk. I aim to help you see your challenges more clearly and to face the problems with less anxiety and tension. It can be an opportunity to think and speak your truth without fear of judgement. I am trained to incorporate techniques associated with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Guided Visualisation, Psycho-dynamic Therapy and Transactional Analysis amongst others into my work.

There are many and varied reasons that may bring you to seek out therapy to help you in your life. These may be current dilemmas, or finding yourself stuck with unhelpful habits and reactions that you know are holding you back. Perhaps in your work and career, or through family and friends. Your health may be not what you would like - be that mental, emotional or physical. Or for many, it could be the classic mid-life crisis has cast its cloak on you.

I am Gemma and I’m a UKCP Mindfulness Based Core Process Psychotherapist in training. Life is full of uncertainty and unpredictability. We can sometimes find ourselves feeling a bit lost, stuck, or maybe even hopeless. Perhaps you are engaging in patterns of behaviour you no longer wish to be doing. Or, maybe, you are going through something very difficult and you need some support to help you make sense of what is happening

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
