Life can present us with unwelcome events at any age. Professional counselling can't change these events but can provide tools and techniques to help minimise their impact. In my practise, counselling is primarily about the relationship between you and me. It is a talking therapy where we can explore what is troubling you in a safe, non-judgemental setting. Every person is an individual and therefore counselling can be different for everyone. I am more relationship driven rather than theory driven.

Hello and thank you for pausing to read my profile. Life can sometimes bring challenges and we find the usual methods of coping no longer work for us. This can lead to feeling anxious, fatigued or unable to do the things that are important to us. Finding a counsellor who is right for you can be a stepping stone towards discovering choices and making changes. As a Humanistic Integrative Counsellor, my approach is rooted in the belief that each person has potential and I offer a welcoming space, where we can explore areas of concern at a pace that suits you, paying attention to your needs and aspirations.

Do you feel overwhelmed by your thoughts & feelings? Are you feeling anxious? Are you suffering from stress and feel “burnt out”? Do you wonder how to manage those constant thought patterns which go round & round in your head, stopping you from being able to think clearly? What would it feel like to offload and release that pressure without feeling judged or being offered well-meaning advice that just isn’t right for you? Imagine that sense of building upon your self-esteem as you learn to trust your gut feeling and know instinctively what is right for you to enable that change to happen?

There are times when many of us feel we could benefit from emotional support and although making that first step to see a counsellor can seem enormous, it is a really positive step as talking in confidence to a professional counsellor can help bring clarity and healing and give you much needed support during a painful or anxious time. Counselling can help you make sense of your emotions and responses and empower you to make changes in your life. It facilitates the freedom to talk openly and confidentially, in a place where you will be really listened to.

When life gets tough we can find ourselves feeling stressed, anxious and overwhelmed. At these times talking to someone else can be helpful to make sense of what is going on. Perhaps you are experiencing loss or bereavement, or a significant transition in your home, work or relationships. Living with uncertainty and change can stir up uncomfortable feelings in us like anxiety, depression, anger or sadness. Whatever is going on for you, I can provide you with the time and space to think things through, and together we will work to make sense of what is going on and find a way forward.

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
