I am an Integrative Counsellor with more than 10 years experience working at Mind and in private practice. I offer both long-term and short-term counselling to adults and young people. My aim is to provide a warm, confidential and non-judgemental space in which you can feel safe and understood and where you can explore the things that feel important to you. Often people I work with initially report feeling stuck with Depression, Anxiety or PTSD. I recognise when we feel stuck with emotional difficulties we need to feel heard, have a way of making sense of what we are feeling and gain a sense of hope for the future. Through the therapeutic work I deliver using CBT and/or EMDR I hope to offer just that. I have an adaptive style and would tailor the therapy to you. Throughout our work together I would be alongside you, go at your pace, value and encourage your contributions, and aim to empower you to meet your goals. I strive to create a warm, non-judgemental, curious therapeutic space.

I have a number of years experience working in a NHS commissioned service around common mental health difficulties. I want to help you reach your goals - we will explore the past and present to help you to heal and thrive.

Change, and uncertainty are part of our lives. You may have reached a crossroads in your life and are not sure which path to take? Maybe you have an important decision to make and need some help exploring it. Perhaps you find yourself pushing people away in relationships, or feel stuck and have been putting things off? You may have a feeling of loss or have experienced loss and are unsure how to deal with it. Do you feel alone with your struggles, and in need of support and reassurance? Feeling unsure about reaching out to friends, family or colleagues is very common.

Every so often life throws things at us that we struggle to deal with or understand. This can be anything from the loss of a loved one to break down in relationship with family members to receiving a life changing diagnosis. It can be because of these things that we begin to question things in our everyday life and who we are. Having suffered a grief which ultimately changed the course of my life, experienced breakdowns in relationships, supported my own child through an ADHD diagnosis and not understanding how my past had affected me I understand how it feels to go through these struggles.

Are you feeling anxious, depressed, stressed, insecure, or overwhelmed by your emotions? Or are you looking for someone who will listen and be non judgemental and to whom you can talk in confidence about issues that are bothering you that would be difficult to share with friends or family members? Your feelings may be related to a bereavement or loss, the effects of abuse, relationship issues, or a major life change or may be related to something unresolved from the past. You may also be seeking support in setting goals and moving on in a positive way. These (and others) are areas in which I am well experienced.

Hi, I'm Julie, and I am passionate about working with people who have experienced abuse or trauma, whether it be sexual, physical or emotional. When we experience trauma we lose part of who we truly are because of the after effects, such as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, flashbacks and dissociation (when we feel distanced from our emotions or ‘spaced out’, as if we’re living on autopilot). I love helping people rediscover who they really are by creating an environment in which they feel safe and completely accepted. I don't analyse you but with careful listening will know what we need to work on.

Welcome and thank you for viewing my profile. I am an Art Psychotherapist which allows for non-verbal expression that can aid exploration and discovery of what is affecting you. There is a wide range of creative possibilities, you don’t need to feel you are “good” at art for it to be helpful to you, or make art at all if talking or other activities are enough at times. The movement and process of art making can help soothe, regulate, express difficult emotions or reveal unconscious processes. We will explore the results together rather than artwork being interpreted by me. Artwork can be spontaneous or guided.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
