Adults and children may find it difficult to talk about how they feel or know how to express the feelings that are causing them anguish. They may find it easier to use a nonverbal method of communication. The use of art materials may allow a connection between the client, the art image/object, and the therapist and whilst reflecting on the image with the therapist, this may encourage a dialogue, the client may discover and make sense of an experience that has previously been causing them distress. Art materials and the process of making art is a tactile, sensory way of helping someone to communicate difficult thoughts and feelings.

Hi, my name is Rimpy Sandhu. I have been working as a volunteer as well as in my private practice as a counsellor and psychotherapist for 10 years . I know it can be very scary and difficult to talk about your issues, revisit those painful memories. Sometimes it’s hard to recognise and express your own feelings. I offer a professional, supportive, confidential, nonjudgmental and ethical therapy in order to help with your presenting issues. Counselling helps you to understand yourself and to find coping strategies to deal with the day to day difficulties you might be facing.

You feel like you can’t cope, you’re fed up, you’ve had enough. Your life isn’t what you want it to be. Living has become hard and there’s no joy in your world. It’s like everyone else except you is happy. You’re haunted by your past. You think you’ll never be happy again. You feel alone like no one else understands how hard your life is at the moment. On the outside you look fine but inside you feel like you’re dying. Everything you do feels like an act to look like you’re okay. You don’t know how to change things or what to do about it anymore.

My name is Julie and I love living in the city, the hustle and bustle of life and human connection. I worked in hospitality management for 25 years and understand the pressures of working full time while running a business and a home. I believe that therapy should be an open space for us to come together and work out what is going on and how you can make some changes to make life better.

Welcome. The fact that you are here demonstrates a natural and healthy drive inside of you, a drive that has motivated you to want to connect and talk about things that are going on in your life. Whether it be a recent traumatic incident, persistent recurring low moods, overwhelming anxiety or a pattern of relating to others that has proved unsatisfactory, I would like to help. I aim to provide a safe but at times challenging environment where you will be encouraged to examine and let go of old and outdated ways of coping that whilst in the past may have been helpful are now getting in the way of the life you want to lead.

I enjoy working with many different client issues but particularly those that are trauma related. I believe that we all have the potential to bring about positive change in our lives whatever our past experiences and therefore I always seek to provide hope. It is a particular delight to work with clients who reflect on the sessions between appointments however I am aware that for many individuals attending sessions can be well outside their comfort zone. I therefore adopt a gentle, encouraging approach allowing clients to work at their own pace.

Do you find that you’re always putting other peoples’ needs above your own? Do you say yes to doing things even though you wish that you could say no? It can be challenging to break free from overthinking, anxiety, and people pleasing, but with the right support, it's possible to improve your self-esteem, meet your own needs without feeling guilty and still be there for others.

Life can be very challenging and difficult at times and it could leave us feeling powerless or without a control. At those times I believe that being fully heard in an accepting environment can be very healing. In our counselling sessions I will aim to develop a trusting, confidential and save space where you can say the “unsayable” and to open the “unopenable” which can support you in finding clarity and inner peace. From my experience as a counsellor and from the experience of my clients, I appreciate that this explorative journey may feel challenging or emotional at times. I will endeavour to ‘walk on this journey alongside you’.

Hello my name is Sonya, I am a CBT therapist (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy). Sometimes in life we all get to a point where we just need to reach out. I can offer you time to listen effectively in a comfortable, safe, and confidential environment. Working with CBT enables you to talk about your feelings and emotions in situations as they may affect our behaviours and by recognising this we can adapt some change. Being able to express your feelings or presenting issue may be difficult especially to loved ones, family and friends. Reach Out will empower you to contribute to your well-being, sense of belonging, and self worth in Therapy.

LGBTQ+ Counsellors

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialised training, either during their degree programme or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalisation in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialised training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
