Therapy can help you whilst going through some of the most difficult times in your life, whether they are in the present or the past. As a counsellor there would be a safe place to offload those harmful thoughts in the room and where the focus is on the thoughts and feelings you have created. My focus is on you the client to support you at an emotional and steady pace; and to progress you from where you are to a place of contentment. I have been a therapist to children to mature adults. Remember that, "you are more than your past".

I believe therapy should be all about providing a conducive space where you can talk about yourself and your world, without fear of being judged, and at the same time, you are provided with the opportunity to learn how to make changes to improve your emotional wellbeing. If there's anything you should know about me, it's the fact that I'm ALWAYS on your side. We're on the same team and I'll help you fight the fight together. My job is to help you navigate and overcome some of the most difficult experiences you have had in your life. And I see it as a privilege that I get to be a part of your journey in finding growth.

Right now, as you read this, you are likely not in a good place. You may be feeling distressed and hopeless or overwhelmed. This may have been going on for a long time and you may have tried to cope in different ways - but it's no longer working? You have tried talking to friends and family but that isn't working either? Maybe there are things that happened a long time ago in your childhood and this is still affecting you today - therapy can be a place to begin to look at all of this and can be the start of beginning to feel better and with improving self-esteem.

Sometimes, we can find ourselves presenting a face to the world that isn't our true self - one that we think will allow us to fit in, to build profitable careers, or to find the love we seek. We often don't realise we are doing this, but instead just feel a sense of stress or discomfort, physical or mental exhaustion, or find ourselves behaving in ways that don't seem healthy or in keeping with our ideals. My focus is to help you find fulfilment in life by being true to yourself and being more integrated as a person - to help you achieve success and balance in your relationships and in your worklife - whatever success means to you.

Life can be hard and doesn't always go the way we would like. I offer a range of times to suit your needs. Where together we can explore what you are experiencing and work towards, creating a meaningful life. I am currently conducting masters research, of my final year in transpersonal psychology, so any spiritual counselling that is required we can work together. I offer a place to get away from everything and talk while feeling safe without judgement. This can be a place to process what has gone on and learn how the world is perceived uniquely by you.

I am an integrative psychotherapist, specialising in working with adults (18 years+) with eating disorders and body image problems, as well as with adults with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), often owing to current or historical abuse. Aside from these specialisms, I also work with people troubled by all manner of other psychological problems (e.g. depression, anxiety, bereavement, relationship problems, OCD, identity problems, etc.), and I welcome whatever issues a client chooses to bring to therapy.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
