Welcome. You've taken the first step. I believe the genuinely supportive presence of another is invaluable; particularly one who is removed from our everyday life, and thus can listen with a completely open attitude. It feels particularly good to be received in this way; our guard can finally drop and in so doing we learn new things about ourselves. There's no deeper way to self-understanding than this. We change to the degree to which we can, unflinchingly, look at ourselves in this way. My aim is to facilitate this process by helping to provide such a space.

While there are many different approaches to psychotherapy and counselling, I work principally within the psychoanalytic tradition, a key part of which is to work in collaboration with clients to try to understand the unconscious origins of difficulties affecting our lives in the present. The aim is not to give advice, but to support people who have reached a point in their lives where they feel themselves to be facing difficult, sometimes confusing feelings and states of mind, to offer a reliable place to come and be listened to, without fear of being judged, criticised or told what to do.

If you are feeling disconnected and undermined by anxiety or distress, you are wise to be considering therapy. There is solid evidence that psychological treatment can help people move on when their own efforts are not enough. Psychotherapy is confidential, safe, and caring. As a clinical psychologist, I have been trained to work collaboratively with my clients to develop a shared way of thinking about their problems and how they can move forward. My practice is integrative, eclectic and client focused: no one therapy suits every person or every issue.

Often people find that painful experiences and relationships in their past mean that things in the present can be complicated and sometimes hard to bear. They affect how we feel about ourselves, how we feel about the world and how we relate to other people we encounter. If we work together we’ll explore what brought you to therapy now and think together about where the difficulties in your present might have come from. I will listen very carefully to you in order to appreciate what you are feeling so that we can begin to see how you might find a greater freedom in your life.

Our consciousness is like a small candle in vast darkness; we must not let it go out. Sometimes when we are faced with life challenges, our mind falters like a candle in the wind; we are confused, sad, angry, or agitated, and at times like this we need listening ears to listen to us and help us decipher our experiences to make sense of what is causing these emotional reactions and pain. Sometimes, confusion and contamination of our minds can be brought about by broken relationships, job loss, bereavement, mental illness, toxic relations, racism, oppression, wrong religious beliefs, divorce and cultural influences to mention a few.

Feeling the fallout of a loved one’s addiction? Are you keeping up appearances that everything's ok, and you can't even tell anyone what your partner or parent or child is doing, and you're exhausted and triggered and other people excuse the behaviour because they can't see what's making your life unbearable. Nobody is taking it seriously other than you. "Addiction robs, such a cunning thief. As it steals, it plants distorted beliefs."

We can all have difficulties in everyday life and encounter problems that we simply find hard to cope with alone. You may feel worried, anxious, low, confused, isolated or may be experience difficulties in relationships. You may be suffering from feelings of low self esteem or low self confidence. You may have been diagnosed with anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder, depression, or maybe you are just feeling sad. When these feelings and thoughts persist and become overwhelming it may be difficult to know which way to turn.

You might be coming to therapy because there is a specific situation or issue, that is causing you distress, and leaving you feeling conflicted, or overwhelmed. Or you might come to therapy because you have a sense that your life isn't working out the way that you'd hoped, perhaps there is something missing that you can't put your finger on or put words to. These difficulties could be linked to the way that you see yourself or to patterns in relationships that stop you getting what you want from life. Many difficulties stem not from feelings themselves, but the way that we've learned to manage those feelings or the way we think about those feelings. Therapy provides a safe space to think together about the issues that you face. It is very much a two-way relationship, in which we work together to understand what the underlying difficulties are. We all have a story inside our heads about who we are and who the world is and that story affects how we interpret what is happening in the here and now. Understanding this story can help you to react to the present moment more creatively and with more of a sense of choice.

Narcissistic Personality (NPD) Counsellors
What type of therapy is best for narcissistic personality disorder?
Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is best treated with talk therapy, which could involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, schema therapy, gestalt therapy, or similar approaches. A therapist will help a patient uncover the feelings that may drive their behavior and discover how to engage with themselves and those around them with greater empathy and understanding, fewer demands, and less defensiveness, with the goal of developing a more authentic sense of self that enables healthier relationships.
How do therapists treat NPD?
By developing a strong therapeutic relationship, and continually focusing patients on relationships, community, and connection, a therapist, through talk therapy, may be able to help someone with NPD change. In sessions, a therapist will help an individual achieve relief from their current stressors, including the treatment of co-occurring conditions such as anxiety or depression. A therapist may also help an individual to recognize unhealthy coping mechanisms, learn new ways of interacting with others, and eventually become able to feel and display empathy.
Can a narcissist be cured with therapy?
Therapy can be effective. After a serious setback or great loss, someone with NPD may be forced to recognize that they are not immune to life’s challenges. That can spur feelings of melancholy and depression that lead them to seek professional help. Once an individual decides to seek help, they have already taken a step that the majority of those with NPD never will. Still, people with NPD often quit therapy as they naturally resist feeling vulnerable, being challenged, or admitting to flaws.
How can you get narcissistic personality disorder treatment for someone?
It is notoriously difficult to convince someone with NPD to seek help. With their feelings of superiority, they may be unlikely to recognize or acknowledge that they have a problem, or that their problem is narcissism. Sometimes, they are aware that they are arrogant and that others resent them but they don’t see it as a problem because they are convinced of their superiority. People with NPD have trouble maintaining relationships, but family members and others who do feel close to them, and whose presence they value, may be able to encourage them to seek therapy.
