We are all able to agree that our physical health is variable, but it may be much harder to admit that our psychological health is in constant flux. All too often, we find ourselves buying into the idea of the "stiff upper lip": that "mental health issues" affect only other people - and "weak people", at that! It can be very daunting, therefore, to recognise that we need help and then to take steps to find a professional who will help things improve. I understand those concerns, because I've been there: and I also have experience of the positive effects of psychotherapy - from both sides of the consulting-room!

We all have periods where we struggle with ourselves, with our feelings and emotions, with our lives. We can experience the darkest of thoughts and feel very isolated, all too often believing we are alone in our suffering. That need not be the case, and with some support and nurturing, we can begin to feel stronger and look towards the future, rather than away from it. My name is Emma and I can offer you a warm yet professional and non-judgemental approach to counselling in a safe, calm space. I use an integrated , client-led approach derived not only from my years of training, but also from a wealth of life experience.

Hello, You will find Counselling with me to be a warm and comfortable environment in which you can talk about your life safely. I believe that developing an honest and trusting relationship between counsellor and client is essential. My therapy is based on building an understanding of how your life up to today, has influenced how you feel, think and behave now. We will also look at understanding how the mind and body connection is working for you now and how you can improve that connection.

Clients approach me when they are seeking greater fulfilment in their lives. Anxiety, fear, and stress, can sometimes affect the relationship we have with ourselves and others . Clients always need to know that they are listened to and taken seriously. This is achieved by helping clients to become more tolerant and kinder to themselves. This is what I believe is the basis to my style of Psychotherapy.

I understand that undertaking Counselling can be daunting - uncovering difficult feelings can be overwhelming and painful. I strongly believe that every person should have the opportunity to live their best possible life and realise their true potential. This leads to improved relationships and a happier, more fulfilled life.

Emotion can be overwhelming. You may feel pressure to change or feel unable to be true to yourself. Sometimes, past experiences can pull you down. You may feel shame or guilt, or feel completely lost. How would you feel if I told you that it is ok not to be ok, that your feelings are important and what you want from life matters? I work with people from all walks of life and I have had the privilege to witness the positive transformation and resilience that people have. You are not alone and I know change is possible.

Sometimes life can be difficult or challenging. Maybe you are struggling with feelings such as sadness, anxiety, anger, depression, stress, worry, guilt, or shame? Perhaps something has particularly knocked you sideways, your usual means to cope with life’s challenges no longer suffice or not the solution? Or do you find yourself feeling lost or empty, or caught up in a cycle of thinking or behaving that is affecting your emotional well being or making life, work or relationships difficult? Have you and your partner got into stuck ways of relating? Is this leaving you feeling hurt, sad or lonely? Are you hurting the ones you love?

Sexual Abuse Counsellors
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
