I hold a BA(Hons) in integrative relational counselling and a registered member of BACP. I have a number of years of experience working in the charity and private sector, supporting clients with a wide range of emotional issues. At the heart of my counselling practice is the aim to provide a space where you can come to breathe, to be, and find unconditional acceptance, positive reflection and discover alternative narratives and perspectives for yourself. A relationship that enables that to occur, allows for the development of self-awareness, self- acceptance, hope and healing.

Coming to counselling is an adventure! It can be immense fun and incredibly inspirational. It can also be hard and will certainly make you take a good look at yourself! If you want to make changes in your life then counselling is one of the most effective ways to do it... and I will help you along the way, walking alongside you, giving you support. It is a great privilege for me - and I deeply value the vulnerable person (within all of us) that counselling helps to find the courage to reveal. I work with kindness, warmth and respect, and our relationship will become strong - yet I will challenge you - but in a caring and gentle way.

If you are struggling with intense feelings of fear, anxiety and sadness and if you find yourself full of panic, despair and frustration you may be trying to understand why you are trapped in these feelings much of the time. If you ruminate on situations, worry about past events, struggle to connect to those in your life and find your days consumed by worry, anger and stress, then a period of therapy may help you to gain insight into the origins of your emotional distress.

The Autism Assessment Centre is run by a small, friendly and compassionate team. As the mother of a neurodivergent child, our lead clinician Dr Faye Millner, draws from her personal journey and intimately understands the emotions and challenges families face during the assessment and diagnostic process. This insight has strongly influenced her professional practice. Our commitment is to provide a service that prioritises transparency and emotional support right from the outset. Through my work as a psychotherapist and Children and families social worker since 1989 I have developed my knowledge and experience in supporting those who have experienced early life trauma, separation and loss. I have a particular interest in attachment theory and its clinical applications. Our childhood experiences may continue to impact our adult lives and ability to make and sustain healthy and emotionally secure relationships. Although psychoanalytically trained my clinical practice is predominately attachment based and trauma informed. I offer both brief and longer term therapeutic support to individuals, couples and groups.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
