Making the decision to reach out and admit that you need the help of someone else can be hard. Making the decision to attend counselling can be even harder. Partners, peers and family may not understand, you may feel like you've failed somehow, you may feel like you are not enough. We also know that this is far from the truth. Taking the step to attend counselling is often the first step on a journey that allows us to confront our difficulties, face our fears, become more self-aware and ultimately take a path that can lead to a better life.

I will always work safely and in a contained manner that will leave you ready to re-enter the world outside of our therapy space.
Hello, I'm Sam & I'm looking forward to meeting you! If you are feeling stuck in patterns impacting your relationships, career, or happiness, and feeling like you're on autopilot, I can help you break free from past influences that no longer work for you. Anxiety of all levels could be preventing you from feeling present in the moment but together, we will work to uncover its source and take away its power so you can get on with living a happier, less stressful life. I am particularly interested in helping with overthinking, stress, overwhelm and working with clients who feel they cannot be themself.

Throughout life we all suffer from personal, emotional and psychological issues. Usually we overcome these but sometimes we can get stuck, tangled up and become negatively affected. If you are finding yourself experiencing anxiety or depression, or struggling with any other issues, then know that help is always available. Whatever it is, I am here to listen attentively, with empathy, without any judgement, and in complete confidence. There are multiple approaches to counselling, but rather than push a particular one (that may not be suitable for you) I prefer we work together to decide which is the best way forward for you.

Although not exclusively, I help men - individually and in groups - who struggle with mental health issues like depression, stress, suicidal thinking and addictions (including alcohol, drugs, porn, gaming and gambling). I work with men who feel they have lost their traditional place or roles within society. I support men who may be experiencing shame and fear related to preconceived or generational notions of their roles and responsibilities. Together, we might find ways to manage stress, improve relationships, cope with trauma, explore identity, enhance your self-esteem, and develop healthier coping strategies.

The mode of counselling I specialise in is Person-Centred psychotherapy, uniquely hu manistic, as the approach affirms that each person has the resources within them to grow and develop, providing they have the right support.
If you are experiencing a recent bereavement, mental health crisis, behaviour change, addiction, relationship issue or uncertainty surrounding your identity I can help you gain a greater perspective through exploration and deep reflection into your self. It is expected of me to demonstrate empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard so that you feel safe to share those difficult thoughts, feelings and actions you are experiencing. I am currently only delivering sessions online via video or telephone, however I am happy to do walk and talk therapeutic sessions, outdoors in the South Manchester Area.

I work effectively on a range of hu man distresses, and I specialise in the psychological difficulties associated with physical health, such as ‘Long COVID’, chronic pain, and higher weights.
Having worked with many clients over the years, I have a good understanding of what hu man distress looks like. Often, we try to push the difficult feelings (both physical and emotional) aside and just ‘get on with it’. Sure enough, it works for a while, but then there comes a point when the usual coping strategies just stop working, and reaching out for help feels somehow wrong too; life feels stuck in vicious circles. If this sounds frustratingly familiar, then you are not alone. With my extensive experience, I can support you to reach your goals, or simply to figure out together first what the goals might be.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
