Hello I am Katy, I am a registered Dance Movement Psychotherapist working in person in Norwich and online. I work with children and adults both individually and in small groups. Dance Movement Psychotherapy (DMP)provides a creative means for clients to explore and address difficulties, symptoms and psychological problems. Building a safe and supportive therapeutic relationship where clients feel seen, valued and safe is really important to me. DMP supports children to self regulate, build confidence and express their feelings and doesn't reply to talking alone to allow for growth and healing.

Outside of work, I love to dabble in creating and experiencing art, explore my spiritual side via reading existential philosophy, yoga, meditation and jogging.
Hi! I'm Aika. I consistently strive to be an authentic, curious and professional psychologist, to create a safe space where those I work with can feel like they can speak freely and honestly and be supported with meaningful steps forward in their lives. Though I have lived and worked in the UK for over a decade now, I was born and raised in Hong Kong, a vibrant and multicultural city that I am proud to call home. I read my bachelor’s degree at the University of Cambridge, my master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Sciences at University College London, and my doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of Oxford.

I believe that a counselling relationship can be helpful, supportive, insightful and cathartic at any stage of life when difficulties or confusion arise that impact on emotional well-being or the ability to bond and connect with others. You may be seeking to be heard and understood, to make sense of what's going on or to discover yourself, find purpose and direction through talking about your lived experience, feelings and relational dynamics.

Are you feeling hopeless? Stuck? Uncomfortable in your skin or in your relationships? We all know that pain in life is unavoidable, but I'd love to help you carry that burden while we work towards creating the life that you dream about. There is no "magic wand" that works for everyone so my goal is to work with you to find what works for you specifically.

Many people go through periods of times when they feel vulnerable, anxious, stressed, depressed or just unhappy. Sometimes these are triggered by obvious causes, like a breakup in a relationship, job loss or a bereavement, while at other times the underlying causes seem opaque, especially when life appears to be fulfilling and good.We carry around sadness, guilt, shame, pain, darkness, anger, despair and in some cases a sense of desperation. It is possible to feel relief, to let some of the pain go, to gain strength and confidence, have the ability to heal and grow so you can live a life without anxiety worry and horrible thoughts.

I understand this must be a difficult time and seeking support is not easy, sometimes we need things to change and don't know where to begin , having experienced this myself I can empathize with this dilemma. I was fortunate to find a counsellor with whom I formed a trusting relationship which enabled me to find purpose and direction, overtime I gained a clearer understanding of self and others around me. This allowed me to grow and flourish in self -acceptance giving me the empowerment to achieve and move forward with my life.

Life is full of adversity, which at times prove too overwhelming or painful for our coping mechanisms. In addition, the trauma may be too intimate to share with friends or family members. This is the point when therapy can prove to be of valid help. Therapy can also support you through life transition and help you to process a significant life event. It offers a safe, confidential and non-judgmental space to talk through and explore past experiences that influences the way we are today. It can help in prioritising what really matters, unblocks creativity and provides tools to turn crises into opportunities.

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
