I offer therapy to adults, young people, and couples. Counselling can help when we feel stuck, lost and overwhelmed and can’t find a way to make sense of those difficult feelings on our own. Speaking to someone who isn’t a friend or family member can help you to see a problem from a different perspective, without judgement or bias. You may be struggling with feelings of sadness, anxiety, stress, anger or loss. Perhaps you'd like to find the mental tools to help give you greater resilience and confidence. Or you could be looking for ways to manage conflict and improve communication within your personal relationships.

I offer psychanalytic psychotherapy to adults suffering with their mental health. Psychotherapy is a way of relating to each other, patient to therapist, where more formative patterns of thinking can be identified and thought about in a safe and confidential environment. You may need help with a more recent set of circumstances, a loss, stress or pressure, depression or anxiety. You may feel it is now time to put words to and perhaps come to terms with a much earlier experience or traumatic period that seems to have had long term effects. You might have no idea why you feel the way you do. Psychotherapy may offer some relief.

You might be feeling low, anxious, stuck in a rut in a relationship or at work or, alternatively, repeating the same old mistakes. You might have decided it's time to make sense of things that have happened in the past or wondering how to resolve a situation that's happening right now. Perhaps things are feeling very distressing or difficult. You might be looking for clarity and a way forward or just some space to be heard.

You thought that becoming a parent would be exciting, but you've also felt overwhelmed, anxious and like you’re struggling to cope. There's been an expectation that you'd be happy and even ‘glowing’ but the reality has often felt very different. It has left you wondering if you’re failing or 'not doing it right' which can make it hard to say you're not OK or ask for help. If this feels like you, please know that you are not alone and that these thoughts and feelings are very common, even if they’re not often talked about.

If you are suffering from relationship difficulties, rootlessness, or just feeling stuck, I may be able to help. I provide a caring and compassionate space with the aim of helping you find more effective ways to resolve issues and concerns that are negatively impacting your life. Distressing, painful feelings in the present might have their origins in the past, and the person experiencing these feelings might or might not be aware of this link. Psychodynamic counselling aids individuals in discovering these hidden links, which will allow him or her greater freedom of thought and action.

Why counselling? Sometimes life throws some pretty awful things at us and we should not have to cope on our own. Thankfully these days we don’t have to. This is where counselling comes in. It is a safe place which is yours to talk in confidence about what ever you want. Sometimes all we need is to be heard and to have someone who is non-judgemental, who listens, is empathetic and kind.

A warm welcome to you. As a humanistic counsellor, my focus is to support you in re-discovering your innate sense of goodness and wholeness. Whether your troubles are underpinned by trauma or depression, our work together can build an understanding of who you are and what you need in order to find the best direction for yourself. I am also a trainee Gestalt Psychotherapist and my focus is embedded in here and now experiences. The Gestalt (roughly translated into 'Whole') approach is often helpful in grounding ourselves in 'what is' and provides a slowing down that offers space to move beyond a fixed way of being.

If negative thought patterns, emotional challenges, or unhelpful behaviours are affecting your daily life, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) may offer the support and tools you need. Life is full of challenges, stress and setbacks—these are natural parts of being human. But while we can't always control what happens to us, we can control how we respond. CBT provides effective strategies to help you see things from a new perspective, empowering you to handle life's difficulties with greater strength and resilience. Here's a comforting truth: It's ok if you're not sure where to begin, therapy is about progress, not perfection.

Taking the step to ask for help is often the hardest thing we do. I think as adults we feel as if we "should be able to cope" or "others have it harder" and that in some way needing help or someone to talk to in difficult times is showing a weakness. We invest time and money in keeping our bodies in shape and while that is the vehicle that gets us through our life we need to care for our other parts too. Our emotions and our relationships constantly need recognition and yet we only seek help when we reach a crisis point. So whether you are at a crisis point or struggling with anxiety, depression or a bereavement I am here to help.

People who sincerely want change and are willing to look within will find a committed cheerleader in me. Identifying unconscious patterns is often uncomfortable work. Learning to have grace and self-compassion in those tight spots ought to be taught in schools. Until then, there's person centred therapy. (Search 'Carl Rogers and Gloria' for a fantastic, if grainy intro to Unconditional Positive Regard)

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
