In addition, I have worked extensively with first responders and military veterans, giving me a deep understanding of the stressors unique to the these communities.

There's a first time for everything. Most newcomers to counselling & psychotherapy start out feeling a little intimidated by the idea of this rather mysterious process. I aim to demystify what I do - clients often comment on what they describe as a down-to-earth and accessible approach. My aim is ultimately to help you understand yourself and your behaviour. I feel that goal is best achieved by working in a non-threatening, straightforward and inclusive way.

Good rapport with your Counsellor's the first step towards achieving change. It takes tremendous strength and courage to reach out and finally say - something's not working. It can be easy to put aside our doubts, worries, traumas and behaviours, and let our busy lives take the lead. Yet as you know, these feelings don't just disappear, and one day something builds up within us that makes us say - 'ENOUGH, I need to deal with this.' Naturally, our first step is to reach out to friends, family, or colleagues, and although we respect their opinions, do we truly allow ourselves to be vulnerable within these relationships?

I have over 30 years experience working in mental health and so know that there are often many reasons that bring people to counselling. Somatic work (which involves the body and its responses) is an important part of my approach and it has helped many of my clients reduce the impact of trauma, overcome anxiety and depression, panic, phobias and PTSD.
We all get stuck, from time to time. Sometimes it feels like we cannot move forward. It can be frustrating, constraining and painful. Yet there is energy behind every blockage, and looking at it from above – as if from a bridge – can be the first step to unlocking our potential. This is what I aim to offer to my clients. My approach adapts to individual needs and is culturally sensitive, as it draws on my experience of transit and change. I practise in English and Italian. Face to face and online. My practice is grounded in the understanding that adverse experiences can affect us on a neurological, psychological and physical level.

As an integrative counsellor and certified trauma therapist, my aim is to help you work through whatever it is that has driven you to seek out therapy. I am a somatic trauma therapist, and this means that we would incorporate both the mind and body into therapy. My integration includes an awareness of how the body responds to emotional distress such as anxiety, anger, sadness and longing: an understanding of what a person’s body is ‘saying’ can help where the right words cannot be found. If this is not something that appeals to you, we can also practice talking therapy as I am experienced in both ways of working.

Somatic Counsellors
How does somatic therapy work?
Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.
Is EMDR a somatic therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.
Is somatic therapy evidence-based?
Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.
What is somatic trauma therapy?
Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
