Hi, I am Dr Kerry Ware and I am an HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist. I am currently the lead for Breast Cancer Psychology in Sheffield where I offer specialist assessment, formulation and treatment of psychological distress in relation to having/having had breast cancer. Are you an adult grappling with anxiety or people-pleasing, or a parent concerned about a child facing emotional challenges like bullying or trauma? These struggles can impact both adults and children. Adults may find it hard to trust themselves or maintain healthy relationships, while children might withdraw or have difficulty expressing emotions. It’s time to break free from these patterns, prioritise mental health, and work towards a more fulfilling, balanced life for yourself or your child.

People seek therapy for different reasons. You may be feeling low, depressed, anxious or stressed; or perhaps you just have the feeling that things are not quite right. It might be that the distress is such that you cannot function at all. These could be recent feelings or you may have been experiencing them for years. In any case, counselling or psychotherapy can help you make sense of things, explore different options or make changes. Some of these issues can be sorted after a few sessions; in other instances, a more long-term approach will be needed.

Hello, I'm Teri. I offer a relaxed counselling style with no judgement. I'm flexible in my approach so I can work with you in a way that suits you. I can also give you immediate tools to help with anxiety, stress and overwhelm, low mood and also teach you relaxation techniques if needed. I work to educate you too, so you know why this is happening and how to look out for the signs in the future. But sometimes we just need to download with no fix. I love what I do and even the most difficult issues can still be helped with compassion, sensitivity and a little bit of humour thrown in.

About me: There are times when we all need someone to listen and work alongside us for an issue that has become complex for us alone. I want to offer you time to be heard and explore issues that you are currently experiencing. It is important to me that we can collaborate and work together to develop a way with you of moving ahead. I think the relationship between counsellor and client is fundamental. I am happy to offer a free twenty minute session for assessment and to see if we are both happy to work together.

I will offer you the time, privacy and support required to explore aspects of your life you may feel you need to understand better or areas in which you would like to grow. Somewhere impartial and unconnected with your everyday life and as someone with who you can share thoughts and feelings. I work in an Integrative Counselling approach which has the basic assumptions that we are naturally social beings with the ability and wish to relate externally to others and internally to ourselves. Due to the significance of relationships in this approach, the therapeutic relationship between us will be central to the process of Counselling.

Many people experience low moods, feeling something is not quite “right” and not sure why. Others feel overwhelmed with their own feelings, or something life changing happened, all your feelings are spinning and you need space to process what has happened to you. When this is affecting your quality of life, then it’s time to seek therapy. Life can be incredibly tough at times , and in our most challenging moments it can be difficult to reach out to those around us for help, you may not be able, or you may not want to worry your family/friends. Do you need someone to talk to? Whatever you are struggling with, I am here to help.

Are you struggling with feelings of anxiety or stress? Are you easily triggered, often on edge and unable to fully enjoy your life? I'm an accredited, experienced Integrative Counsellor and EMDR Therapist, with extensive experience of working with anxiety and stress, particularly when the anxiety is a symptom of trauma. It is estimated that 1 in 3 adults have experienced one traumatic event. However, it is less well known that anxiety can be symptom of trauma. Counselling provides you with a confidential, professional space to help you understand the root of your anxiety; EMDR enables traumatic memories to be processed.

Hello, I am a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, CAT Therapist and Coach. I am passionate about working with people in the way that they find most helpful. We can all find ourselves at a point in our lives when things are not how we’d like them to be. We can be caught up in negative patterns, experience difficult symptoms (such as struggling with sleep or anxiety, feeling low or stressed) and have difficulties with our relationships, work or our health. We may have experienced something traumatic or stressful that we struggle to cope with or find ourselves caught up in a negative situation that we don’t seem to be able to escape.

Chronic Illness Counsellors

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
