You may wholeheartedly wish to cut down or stop drinking and/or using substances but find it harder to do than you imagined. Problematic drug and alcohol use causes unhappiness – to you and the people around you. I offer online therapy for alcohol/drug problems, including treatment aftercare, recovery mentoring and relapse prevention guidance. Addiction counselling helps you understand addiction, strengthens your commitment to cutting down or achieving abstinence, and addresses the risky thinking and behaviour that can sabotage recovery. I've also helped partners and family members affected by addiction for more than 20 years.

Together, we’ll explore the underlying factors driving your alcohol use and work to dismantle the emotional barriers and unhealthy patterns that keep you tied to it.

Do you find yourself increasingly dissatisfied, wondering how things got this way? These are common struggles, and I’ve worked with many others who have faced similar challenges. As a psychotherapist specializing in alcohol treatment, I use a research-backed approach, to help individuals break free from this cycle.

The approach I first trained in and like to use the most is an integrative model called the Relational approach. This approach incorporates both humanistic and psychodynamic elememts which means it retains the warmth of the humanistic models which focus on empathy and building trust, and the Freudian concepts of the unconcious mind and transference. I work best with clients who are willing to explore how they relate to people, by examining what is going on in our relationship during therapy. I really enjoy working with clients who have issues around relationships and attachment, and find this work both interesting and rewarding.

These aspects condition us to respond and interact with people and situations in our lives in very particular ways. All of us need to find resilience at times of stress, or just to deal with day to day issues that may cause us anxiety and impact on the quality of our lives. Life events such as bereavement or change affect us in different ways with no simple, right solutions. I offer a way to share and resolve issues within a non-judgemental therapeutic relationship.

Alcohol Use Counsellors
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
