You may be struggling with memories of past or recent trauma, having overwhelming feelings or have patterns in your life that you'd like to change. You may have experienced a one off trauma that continues to bother you, or you may have a complex trauma history. You may be worried about your thoughts or behaviour, either towards yourself or others. Perhaps your relationships have not been very healthy and you want to break the cycle. Therapy can help you to address these issues and bring you back to the self you used to be or move you forward to a stronger healthier place.

I understand how important it is to find a therapist you feel comfortable with, especially at a time when you may be feeling stuck or alone, dealing with a particular issue, or feeling more generally overwhelmed? I offer a warm, compassionate, confidential and non-judgemental approach; a place to offload, perhaps find simple coping strategies, fresh insight, and the greater sense of balance or peace of mind you may seek.

Helping clients with anxiety issues. Able to empathize with distress from cancer, grief and menopause symptoms. Maybe you just need to talk or would like coping tools, or to know, you are not alone. Its good to have goals and want to feel better about ourselves. Its also important to feel listened to and understood in a deeper way, to be heard. The recognition of being listened to can be an incredibly motivating force that can ignites us when we are together, it is meaningful and sustains us in our darkest moments.

I offer an open and inclusive space to over-thinkers and high achievers. Those with the feeling that whilst life might (or might not!) look good, something is missing. What issues do I work with? Anything really….. but most of my clients come to me struggling with anxiety or isolation, feeling worried and overwhelmed. Maybe feeling trapped in a life you may have designed but not longer like? Or a feeling of sadness and hopelessness, loss of sense of who you are following a bereavement, career change or life event? A fear of not earning enough, judgement from others or something under the surface that you don’t know.

I work with clients using techniques from different therapy methods from person centred, somatic and behavioural to CBT and solution focused and IFS. My focus is on the person in front of me and where they are at that moment. Any client arrives with an idea of what they want to look at, but the journey that follows is unique and generally directed by the client's needs. The difference can be evident so quickly once we move together towards a clearer understanding of how to move forward from the place the client began - its fulfilling and rewarding for all involved

At times it’s natural to feel overwhelmed and stressed out by life. That can create deep sadness, despair or loss of hope resulting in depression. Feeling fearful and anxious about life and the future can feel too much to cope with and have a really profound affect on everyday life. Sometimes it is recent events that are causing you to feel that you are really struggling while at other times those difficulties are linked to childhood neglect, trauma or abuse. Sometimes how you feel about yourself can result in a lack of confidence or low self esteem which can impact on your ability to feel at peace in the world and in relationship.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counsellors

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
