My name is Rachel. Share your burdens with me, be accepted and listened to, ease tensions, stress, anxiety and feel less sad. I can help you understand why you feel the way you do and discover solutions that enable you to make positive change. You will find ways to reset and self care, improve your confidence and self-esteem. I am a trained Outdoor Therapist based in Saltash at Churchtown Farm Nature Reserve and the Rame Peninsula at Mount Edgcumbe Country Park. Being in the open air is more freeing than sitting indoors. Moving the body enables us to release tensions and it will stimulate new thoughts that encourage change.

I believe that we are all perfect human beings trying our best to navigate the complexities of life. It’s my job to help you to make sense of how the past influences your present so that you can have a future which realises your full potential. I have many years experience of sitting in rooms with people and listening to their stories in a range of professional contexts. It is still the work I consider to be of the highest privilege. My main therapy training is psychodynamic. I also use person-centred, cognitive-behavioural therapy, brief solution-focused therapy, compassion-focused therapy, acceptance & commitment therapy.

The therapeutic relationship is a place where two human beings can connect on a deeper level to what we may experience in some aspects of day-to-day life, and to really begin to unpick the challenges that you may be experiencing. The chance to sit with another person, to talk, be free from judgments, in a safe and non-threatening environment can be truly life changing. It is an opportunity to feel seen, heard and understood, without the other person having an agenda for how they would like you to be. As well as my work online I am able to see clients face to face at Horizons Counselling service in Plymouth.

Most often, I work with clients who need a safe, confidential space to make sense of different types of relational hurt. In the first instance, I make plenty of time to for us to talk about and establish your goals for therapy, so we're both clear how you'd like things to be, how you’d like to feel and what it is you hope gain from the process. From this point, I see our work as a collaborative exploration in moving towards where you want to be, equipping you with the tools you need to find meaning, purpose and a greater sense of peace and ease in the world.

Life is like surfing. You can't always predict the conditions, but whatever water you find yourself in, psychotherapy can help you choose which waves to paddle for, which to ignore and how to shape a board that suits the way you surf best. My practice is based in contemporary psychoanalytic psychotherapy and explores unconscious ways of thinking and acting that may be impacting on your ability to live well today - whatever that means for you. Rather than one psychoanalytic school, I can choose from a range of theory and approaches depending on what suits your needs and how you prefer to work.

I believe that everyone has the ability to heal and grow. Sometimes we might get stuck and need support to move forward or to be more true to ourselves. I offer a safe, confidential space and a warm, empathetic and non-judgemental therapeutic relationship where you can bring whatever feelings, thoughts or concerns you are experiencing. This can bring greater self awareness and open up new choices and possibilities for you.

It is never easy taking the first step asking for help when you are struggling with life. We place ourselves at the bottom of list when it comes to our own well-being. Have you reached a point where you are beginning to notice your mental health is starting to impact those around you or maybe you no longer enjoy the things that used to bring you joy. Maybe your physical health has changed, are you distant and withdrawn towards others, or maybe you put on an "act" when you're around others to avoid others seeing you as you really are. Or maybe you wish to develop a greater self-confidence, or tools to cope more effectively with life?

Life isn't a straight forward, easy process, it has its roller coaster of ups, downs and roundabouts, how do we maintain our focus on our everyday lives, we attempt to get on with it, but sometimes it can feel like an uphill struggle. We become overloaded, overwhelmed, stressed and irritable and sometimes our friends, family and colleagues notice our behaviour before we do. When we do realise that we need support, help, courage, whatever you chose to call it then we are half way there, the rest is looking for someone to share our difficulties and pressures with. I have over 15 years experience working for different settings.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
