Much of my work is with depression, anxiety, phobias, OCD, panic, relationships, trauma, and adult ADHD.
Hi, I hope your search for a therapist is going well. It can be a difficult process, but it is important to find a therapist who feels right for you. The relationship with your therapist is, on average, more helpful than their training and experience. Person-centred therapy is a relationship. It is not dependent on medical diagnoses, yet can help with all conditions. It is well proven to be as effective as other leading therapies, but uniquely it puts the client at the centre of the process. There is no 'you have x or y' or 'you should do this'. The right questions, and answers, will come from within during our conversations.

I have been around the block a few times myself - climbed out of my own paralysing depression, dealt with disabling anxiety for the first 22 years of my life too.
Life is tough. The world can be a very harsh and unforgiving place indeed. Above all I work with kindness, acceptance and understanding - successful therapy always depends upon a partnership between you and me, both/all of us working purposefully together to solve the issues that are in your way - let's face it, there is simply not enough of those three qualities around these days. It is never a failure to reach out for help - never. It takes courage. So please reach out: I promise to take your hand, keep you safe, and together we'll walk the path to better days.

I have skills working with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, life reviews, and specialist experience in supporting those with life-limiting or long-term physical conditions, including persistent pain.
I have provided a therapeutic space for adults of all ages across NHS, charity, community, and private settings since completing doctorate level training in 2006. I have supported individuals facing significant life challenges, offering a relationship in which experiences have been shared, clarified, and understood, and where the holistic impact of those experiences on all parts of the person, and their external connections, has been acknowledged. I work collaboratively with all clients to establish therapeutic aims and suitable approaches to enable the reduction of distress and identify actions to re-establish ownership in living.

I have worked with and supported individuals with a range of complex mental health difficulties for over twenty years, initially as a nurse and now as a qualified CBT therapist . Many of my clients have needed an alternative way to view their situation to 'free' them from the distress they have been experiencing, along with a tailored tool box of coping strategies which they can choose from to empower them to manage the challenging experience. I have helped adolescent & adults experiencing OCD, PTSD, psychosis and/or complex emotional/relational difficulties, where the intervention required has been stress/ anxiety targeted.

Sometimes when we are feeling, anxious, down or confused and we don't know which way to turn, it is much more helpful to talk to an empathetic and non-judgemental professional who can be objective and not bring their own opinions, feelings and thoughts into the mix.
Sometimes life just feels too difficult, and you feel that you can't go on any longer trying to cope with what is troubling you alone. Perhaps you are suffering from anxiety, depression, abuse, grief or trauma. Perhaps you are very stressed at work or have lost someone dear to you or your relationship is in trouble. Maybe you need to make an important decision but just cannot do it. Whatever the issue, I can help. I will treat you with sympathy and respect and offer you a safe and confidential space to discuss with me what is troubling you. I offer individual counselling or Couple Counselling in person or skype.

I work with adults, children and young people & cover a wide range of issues including depression, anxiety, panic attacks, bereavement, self esteem, sexual abuse, bullying, trauma, family, intrusive thoughts & repetitive behavioural patterns.
At times in our life, many of us feel unbalanced in some way. We may know there is something there, that there’s something to unravel but feel unable to access what it is – for others we know what’s causing us discomfort but feel unable to share with friends or family members. I can provide you with a confidential space to explore and unravel whatever is going on for you - without judgement and at your own pace. We can work together to reach your potential as a individual, allow your thoughts and feelings to become clearer & the mental dust to settle, perhaps make changes & move forward positively in a way comfortable to you.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
