I have a special interest in adoptees and the issues adoption can bring.
I am a qualified counsellor and complementary health practitioner and tutor. I studied counselling and addiction at the University of Bath and I also have wide ranging life and work experience. Most of us can have times in life when it seems as though we can't cope and we may feel worried, fearful or confused. At these times it can be helpful to give ourselves the gift of speaking to someone outside of our family or friendship group. Someone we can be honest with, without fear of judgement or opinion.

People seek therapy for different reasons, life issues, trauma due to mental or physical events, loss of a loved one, or a breakdown of a relationship. Choosing therapy can be a route to discover better ways of managing moments of anxiety or depression. As well as working with individuals, I am experienced at working with couples who are struggling to stay together or trying to part amicably. I also work with couples and individuals who experience issues on becoming parents (fertility/ adoption) or with those who find it difficult to make the decision to parent because of their own past experiences.

I have a lot of experience working with depression, anxiety, grief, early trauma, emotional sensitivity, adoption/fostering and attachment disorders.
Low self esteem, low mood, anxiety, painful life events, relationship breakdown or issues relating back to your childhood can be difficult to process on your own. When upsetting thoughts, feelings and behaviours hold you back from living life to the full, it can be really isolating. Experiencing someone really being there, hearing and understanding your experience, giving you space to breathe, grieve and process is really important. However, understanding the cause of this distress and healing these wounds can then empower change. Psychotherapist or Art Psychotherapist can enable that change.

My work in all areas of adoption has provided me with the knowledge and skills to work with traumatic loss, abuse and developmental difficulties.
At any time in our lives events can take over leaving us feeling anxious or depressed; or early negative experiences or trauma can replay in our mind, causing distress. My belief is that each individual is the person best placed to make the right decisions about themselves, however, there are times when we can lose sight of who we are and feel taken over by negative thoughts, feelings and responses that seem to work at odds with the life we want to lead. Counselling can help to make sense of these thoughts, feelings and responses and explore options for change by providing a safe space where you will be heard and respected.

Does my adopted child need therapy?
Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioural or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.
When should adoptive parents seek therapy?
Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioural, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.
Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?
Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.
What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?
A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
