You might be coming to therapy because there is a specific situation or issue, that is causing you distress, and leaving you feeling conflicted, or overwhelmed. Or you might come to therapy because you have a sense that your life isn't working out the way that you'd hoped, perhaps there is something missing that you can't put your finger on or put words to. These difficulties could be linked to the way that you see yourself or to patterns in relationships that stop you getting what you want from life. Many difficulties stem not from feelings themselves, but the way that we've learned to manage those feelings or the way we think about those feelings. Therapy provides a safe space to think together about the issues that you face. It is very much a two-way relationship, in which we work together to understand what the underlying difficulties are. We all have a story inside our heads about who we are and who the world is and that story affects how we interpret what is happening in the here and now. Understanding this story can help you to react to the present moment more creatively and with more of a sense of choice.

Welcome. You've taken the first step. I believe the genuinely supportive presence of another is invaluable; particularly one who is removed from our everyday life, and thus can listen with a completely open attitude. It feels particularly good to be received in this way; our guard can finally drop and in so doing we learn new things about ourselves. There's no deeper way to self-understanding than this. We change to the degree to which we can, unflinchingly, look at ourselves in this way. My aim is to facilitate this process by helping to provide such a space.

Psychotherapy offers the opportunity to explore the origins and roots of the difficulties you are experiencing in life today. We will work together to understand and untangle your feelings and behaviours, discovering a better understanding of the lifestyle choices you are making. I understand that seeking therapy can be both comforting and daunting, but it can also be liberating and I commend individuals who reach out for help. Our pain can often be a message that there is something amiss in our lives, and I believe it is important that we listen to that message. Whether you are dealing with a difficult time in your life and need help managing the emotions and thoughts, I aim to assist individuals to better understand the relationship between their feelings and thoughts and explore ways to change maladaptive patterns.

People seek therapy for different reasons and at different stages of life. Usually therapy is sought when stress has outweighed the ability to cope, or usual ways of coping have become less effective. Common reasons for seeking therapy include work stress, relationship problems, anxiety, worry, low self-confidence or depression. Some people will have experienced feelings of distress for many years before feeling able to seek help.

I am an HCPC registered art therapist, counselor, and somatic stress release practitioner. I have worked with individuals and groups from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds and continue to function from cultural humility to inform my practice. Clients I work with are often interested in knowing more about themselves, understanding their feelings, reconnecting with their bodies, and building fulfilling relationships. In my work, I emphasize the need for co-creating safety within the therapeutic relationship so that parts of your self and identity that have been unfairly shamed can be met with curiosity, play, and care.

Trauma-focused therapy helps to address the underlying traumatic memories and triggers that contribute to anxiety. CBT, on the other hand, equips individuals with practical techniques to identify and challenge negative thought patterns. However, a combination of trauma-focused therapy and cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) can offer effective strategies for managing anxiety and reclaiming a sense of calm. I provide a safe and supportive environment for processing and healing trauma, and all anxiety-based issues. I offer therapy sessions over the phone and video link.

What’s the most effective treatment for psychosis?

The most effective treatment for psychosis is coordinated specialty care. In this model, a team of professionals works with a patient to address all aspects of the underlying disorder. This approach incorporates individual or group therapy, employment and education support, family support and education, medication management (which often involves low doses of antipsychotics), and case management to facilitate problem-solving as needed.

When should people seek treatment for psychosis?

People should seek immediate treatment at the earliest indication of psychosis. Symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized or blocked speech, and agitated body movements. Early signs that a person may be developing a disorder that will lead to psychosis include suspiciousness of others, memory problems and distractibility, an inability to think clearly, rapid or nonsensical speech, withdrawal from friends or family, aggression toward others, and sensitivity to bright lights or noises.

What if psychosis is left untreated?

Without treatment, psychosis can have significant repercussions, including injuries, job loss, homelessness, financial or legal trouble, ruptured relationships, and suffering for the person and their family. While early treatment for psychosis often yields the best results, there is no point past which it becomes useless to seek treatment. At any point, treatment can make a difference.

How do I get someone else to seek treatment for psychosis?

It’s extremely difficult to watch a loved one suffer from hallucinations, delusions, and other elements of psychosis—sometimes exacerbated by their fears of treatment. Have a conversation with them in a quiet space and maintain a calm, supportive tone. Share your concerns about behaviors you’ve observed, suggest treatment, and explain the potential benefits. Listen carefully to their responses. The person may not be ready after one conversation, but with time, they may come around.
