People come for therapy for many different issues. A common theme is that people want to get a greater sense of themselves and understanding of what may have caused their issues and how they might grow past these challenges. Therapy can help you feel better about yourself and improve your mental health.

My name is Mark Owen and I am a BACP and COSRT registered Counsellor with a degree in Marriage and Family therapy and a Postgraduate Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy. Since 2012 I have worked in a wide variety of therapeutic settings both private care and within the NHS including, general mental health services, Eating Disorders Clinic, Bereavement Counselling and a Sexual Health Clinic. There are many models of therapy and everyone responds differently to the various methods. Using an Integrative Model of therapy, which means I use a range of different models, allows me to design a more tailor made plan for you.

I think sometimes we just reach that place in life when we say 'enough is enough'. For some it can mean it is time to stop and face something, and to someone else it can mean it is maybe time to 'let it go'. There's no end to the potential meanings for reaching 'that point'. i think we've all been there at some stage or another. Does this sound familiar ? That's okay, i totally understand where you're coming from. What is important is acknowledging that you have had the energy and motivation to seek someone to support you through this - it takes courage and strength to take this step. Well done!

As the world shifts around us, and under us, it’s very common to feel overwhelmed, anxious, or to suffer from depression. Hi, I'm Steve and I would love to help. I have a wide experience of different groups, clients, and presenting issues, and I would love to offer a warm and non-judgemental presence to help you find clarity in your life. I work in Prestwich, Salford and Manchester in person, and countrywide online. I have particular experience with working with stress, bereavement, anxiety, and depression. I recognise therapy can be expensive, so offer reduced rates for those on lower incomes.

Are you looking to gain some clarity in life? Are you struggling in relationships or trying to make sense of your past? Perhaps you feel isolated, angry and are missing out on connections with friends and family. This can suffocate the parts of your life which should bring you joy; this unhappiness can lead to further disconnect with those around you.

“Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and die with their song still inside them” Men don’t suffer more psychological disorders than women overall, however, the way men suffer them can be more destructive and problematic as they tend to externalise their suffering in the form of violence, substance abuse, anger, aggression, etc. Moreover, men’s psychological suffering is further compounded by men often hiding their issues and being reluctant to report symptoms. My mission is to work with men to help them become the type of man they want to be and so to lead their 'best lives'.

I imagine it's overwhelming reading all these blurbs and trying to figure out which one stands out for you, so I'll try to minimise the noise. Qualified therapist and supervisor, 12 years' full time experience, bloke, getting on a bit these days, sense of humour, friendly, down to earth, but with the wisdom that comes with age and experience. I will do my best to understand you and support you but I will also challenge you to get out of whatever is keeping you stuck when appropriate! I have a proven track record of reducing distress and suffering and helping people to understand themselves and life.

Historic experiences can impact our emotions and behaviours, often many years after the events. I’m here to provide a safe space to explore and make sense of what happened to you. We’ll work together to explore ways to manage the psychological and physiological effects of trauma, and develop your confidence to cope and overcome difficulties. I support people who have anxiety, depression, flashbacks and ptsd. It is important to me to understand what is important to you. I will support and empower you to live your life in accordance with your own values and beliefs, rather than the difficulties that have been getting in your way.

I can help people who are experiencing all levels of distress and unhappiness. You may have feelings of dissatisfaction and a sense that you are not getting all that you want in your life. At the other end of the spectrum you may be finding that every day is a real struggle with strong, even overwhelming, feelings of depression, anxiety, stress, anger etc. I believe that all of us want to strive to feel happier and more fulfilled than we currently are. We want to feel a connection with other people and to have a sense that we are leading meaningful, enjoyable lives - even when at times we feel at a loss as to how to achieve this.

Men's Issues Counsellors

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
