I have been a counsellor since 2012, both in private practise and working for the YPC, Brighton, AGE UK and the YMCA/Wellbeing Service. As a humanistic/intergative therapist, I believe that you are the expert on yourself and I aim to provide the conditions which allow you to explore your motivations and themes, and make meaning from your own experience. I offer an empathic, non judgemental and respectful space. By building a relationship based on acceptance it becomes possible to look at, recognise and understand where problems in your life may have arisen. Counselling can be for anyone who feels lost, sad, lonely, confused.

There are different times in our lives when we may encounter challenges in our emotional world. Transition and change can sometimes trigger these challenging feelings. For example, moving home or employment, changing relationships or friendships; life changes such as going to university or reaching age milestones. Any of these can significantly affect the way we feel about ourselves. We react in different ways to what we encounter in our environment. We might become depressed or overwhelmed by intense emotions or we might feel anxious and unable to engage in social activities. It can all become too much to manage alone.

I work on the premise that there is more to be known about each of us than we might be aware of. My approach is to try and understand how you experience the world and others. As we get to know each other, we will find a way of working together that identifies your struggles and the choices you have in relation to those. I work with the whole person, not with a collection of symptoms. I believe that while your symptoms are important, they are not the whole truth about who you are. Psychoanalysis offers you the opportunity to work intensively, up to 3 times a week, if we both feel that would be right for you. Concession rates apply.

Having experienced at first hand the hugely positive impact counselling has had on my own life, I chose to train as a psychodynamic therapist to help others experience the same profound benefits. I now use an integrative approach, which has enriched my work with clients. Working with you, we will together examine and uncover often unconscious or repressed memories which in turn can drive unhelpful patterns of behaviour. We will explore the sources of your problems and aim to deal with the underlying issues, not just try to find a way to cope with them. Only by making peace with the past can you look forward to a happy future.

I believe we have within ourselves all the necessary resources and knowledge to live a full and meaningful life. Counselling can provide the necessary conditions to re-establish that potential. My work is firmly grounded in the Humanistic tradition of believing that you are the expert of your own lived experience. My role is to enquire, respectfully challenge and understand that perspective, which in turn can help to empower you in your everyday life.

Infertility Counsellors
How can infertility affect couples and their relationship?
Clients who are dealing with infertility may experience conflict and communication problems. It’s not unusual for shame, blame, and guilt to arise in cases of infertility, whether the source of the problem is one partner or both. This means that clients are upset and pulling away from their partner just when they need them the most. Some clients may find it difficult to spend time around friends and family who are pregnant. Friends and family can also make hurtful comments that increase tension during this time.
How does therapy for infertility issues work?
The therapist will begin by gathering information about the client or couple and make a treatment plan for their specific concerns. In addition to addressing common mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and trauma reactions or PTSD, therapists can help clients improve their decision-making and deal with stressors unique to infertility. Some examples include coping with the “two-week wait” before a pregnancy test, the distress associated with a failed attempt or miscarriage, and the shame and blame sometimes associated with reproductive concerns.
What type of therapy is best for infertility issues?
Many therapists offer psychotherapy for individuals and couples who are dealing with infertility issues. Some helpful therapeutic approaches include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which can aid clients in reframing negative thoughts about their situation. Expressive writing and art therapy can help clients process difficult feelings. Clients might also benefit from group therapy to experience support from others who are dealing with the same problems.
How long does therapy for infertility issues take?
There is no set length for therapy that addresses infertility or reproductive concerns. Some clients might find it helpful to continue therapy during their pregnancy to have healthy ways to cope with any associated stress, anxiety, depression, or trauma. Some clients who decide not to pursue fertility treatments might benefit from the support of a therapist. The duration of therapy varies depending on the individual client’s specific needs and goals.
