Do all your relationships end the same way, and you want to learn how to stop repeating the pattern? Whatever reason you have for looking for counselling, I’d like to reassure you that I have probably already helped someone in your situation, and I can help you. The first step, asking for help, is the hardest.

Life can be tricky and struggling to keep your head above water can enhance overwhelming feelings. Perhaps it may lead you down a path of isolation, loneliness and the possibility of embarrassment that may prevent you from reaching out to family and friends. Finding a counsellor can be daunting and I believe that the relationship between counsellor and client is key for therapeutic change. I encourage my clients to safely explore any issues bought into therapy in an attempt to gain a greater understanding, begin to heal and grow within an environment that is non-judgemental. Please do get in touch if you have any questions.

Are you going through a difficult time in your life? depression, anxiety, addictions, relationship issues, trauma, disorders? Finding it hard to cope? lonely, confused, lost and uncertain what to do without someone who can listen and understand you? There can be times in your life when you need someone to talk to, listen to you or just be quiet with. Often this is not possible with your partner, family or friends and you may need a different perspective from someone that is not part of your life. Counselling can help you understand your thinking, your feelings the ways in which you act, helping you to make better life choices.

We can all at times experience life as challenging and stressful. Clients contact me for a variety of reasons including:partners of childhood sexual abuse survivors, anxiety, work stress, bereavement, depression, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, loss of direction as well as wellbeing for men. Couples also come to my practice. Some come to improve how they communicate, some wish to find a way through their current difficulties and to find a way forward, some wish to separate with compassion and understanding, whereas others come to keep their communication open via couple tune up sessions after the main therapy has ended.

My particular interests are: helping men and women who have suffered trauma, from mental, physical and sexual abuse; and working with couples - around commmunication and relationship issues. Providing a safe, supportive space, I employ a Relational Approach, using the unique therapeutic relationship between me and each client as a way for us to mutually understand the personal dynamics of each person - how they interact with themselves, and with the world - and to help facilitate personal change. Through our therapeutic relationship we can help change patterns of thinking, feeling and behaviour causing pain and distress.

I support Children and Young People with counselling through face to face conversations, therapeutic exploration and / or play. This enables a child or young person to express, explore and make sense of events and experiences that are hard to verbalise or articulate. It is a non-directive and client-centred approach to therapy that allows the client the opportunity to play out, talk about and work through feelings and emotions within a safe and therapeutic environment.

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
