Do you struggle with low self-esteem, anxiety, insecurity, feeling overwhelmed or a challenging relationship? Are you finding it difficult being a new mum, going through the menopause, recovering from abuse or moving past trauma? Have you lost your sense of self? Perhaps you find yourself always putting others first, never saying ‘no’ and feeling like your opinions/desires are not important? Do any of these struggles affect your daily life, relationships and enjoyment, and you wonder if life is always going to feel this hard? But it is possible to live your life in a happier, more positive way. Life won’t always feel this hard.

Hi, I am Ella, before I tell you a bit about me, I would like to acknowledge the important step you have taken to find a counsellor. I appreciate that coming to counselling can feel like a really daunting, anxious thing to do which can create a barrier to accessing help sometimes, that’s why it’s important to take your time to find the right counsellor for you.

If you are reading this, I imagine you are experiencing some difficult issues in your life. It may be life has recently changed, new challenges have appeared, or you may have always felt life was difficult, and you need to explore issues that are causing you pain and making you feel unhappy. It takes great strength to realise that life’s issues are becoming overwhelming, and together, we can explore your situation and help you understand yourself. I do an immense amount of work with couples regarding relationship issues and goals as well.

The aim of sessions is to work towards an understanding of the challenges you face and the changes you wish to make. During sessions, you will be the focus of our attentions and I will value you without judgement, as a unique person, an equal. Having been in counselling myself, I have an understanding of the process. It can be a daunting prospect, and I will support you in that journey. I have listed many specialities and whilst I do have experience of working with them, I believe there is more to you than a "diagnosis" or an "issue" so the focus is on you the whole person, and whatever you choose to bring. NOTE - OVER 18'S ONLY

Counselling is an opportunity to be heard, to share with a trained person some of the difficulties that you encounter and to be supported to make positive changes to your life. I work in a respectful, empathic, understanding and compassionate way, providing a confidential, non-judgmental space to explore your thoughts, emotions and experiences. By reflecting on these experiences you can learn new ways of doing things and progress past what you feel is holding you back or causing you difficulty. I currently work from a comfortable and private space that is used solely for client sessions, online via video call or outdoors.

Life can be hard at times. We can experience loss, changes in our health, family circumstances or work life. Maybe our relationships are not fulfilling our needs and we do not know how to change things. At times, we don’t feel good about ourselves, we lose confidence in our ability to cope with life or maybe we feel impacted by past experiences or held back through feelings of anger, shame or guilt. Sometimes we don’t know what’s wrong, but we just know something isn’t right. I can help you explore what is going on for you by giving you a supportive space to talk and be heard.

We can't change the past but we can re-examine the influence it has had on us. We can't change other people, but we can grow and change ourselves. Counselling is an opportunity to think about the life we want and to work on making it happen. Sometimes this means identifying and disrupting old patterns that no longer work for us. Sometimes it means becoming more assertive, "emotionally literate", confident or empathic. Sometimes it means being able to tell which people are good for us right now. Sometimes it just means crying out the hurt.

I am an integrative relational UKCP trainee psychotherapist in advanced training. I work with a range of issues, including trauma, PTSD, complex PTSD (CPTSD), anxiety, grief, and depression. Sometimes, issues aren't clear and may simply feel like being lost or without direction. Relational psychotherapy focuses on the role of relationships and interpersonal dynamics in understanding and addressing psychological issues. While past relationships matter, my approach also emphasises the present moment. By exploring your current thoughts, feelings, and interactions, we can gain insight into how you relate to others and yourself right now

Coming to therapy can be a difficult decision to make. When we are having difficulty in our lives our thinking can become unclear or unhelpful and we do things that we think might help in the short term, but can perhaps have a negative effect in the long term. This can result in becoming trapped in unhealthy cycles where you may also be experiencing unpleasant emotions. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can help to unravel the complex human thoughts and emotions that sometimes contribute to being less than at our best, and find new ways of thinking and being to move forward.

Maybe the journey isn't about becoming anything. Maybe it's about unbecoming everything that isn't really you, so you can be who you were meant to be all along. Our lives present unique challenges – relationship difficulties, bereavements, life transitions, & chronic symptoms - often creating feelings of frustration, anxiety, & sadness. At such times it is easy to forget that we all need assistance in addressing these challenges, especially as they can often feel overwhelming, or even impossible, to deal with. We all deserve to have support when we are struggling, & often it is specifically this support that allows change to occur.

I am a UK-qualified (PGdip/MA) integrative humanistic counsellor. I have 3 years experience working mainly with people suffering from stress, anxiety, depression and issues around self-esteem. My practice draws on a number of different counselling theories but is primarily person-centred, based on the exploration of thoughts and feelings heard without judgement. I think my clinical training is supported by a rich life-experience. Aside from the UK, I have lived in Spain, the USA, and Colombia. I spent years doing many different jobs before focussing on a career in counselling.

Sometimes life can become too overwhelming because of difficult events or relationships, both old or current. You may be struggling with anxious feelings or have become stuck in unhelpful behaviours as you try to manage your world. This can become a lonely and disempowering place. People come to therapy because they recognise these thoughts or strategies are limiting their lives. My work is humanistic in approach with a person-centred focus; this means that I will listen and value what you share and not be judgemental or directive. I build empathic therapeutic relationships that enable you to feel safe to share your emotions.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
