Welcome. Everyone has times in life when their mental health is particularly challenging and they face emotional or psychological difficulties. If that describes you here and now, it can be helpful to seek support to become more aware of the impact of past life experiences, how those events still influence how you are in the world today and explore your thoughts and feelings around options for making changes in the future. Your issues, needs and goals could arise from your working life, personal life or a combination of both. You could be looking for more immediate help or seeking to better understand deeper, long-standing issues.

As part of being a Psychologist, I am passionate about working with people, finding where they can gain more power in their life to affect the changes they want to see. I work with people with a wide range of difficulties and am keen to help them to contextualise their difficulties within their life experiences, to support the dropping of the toxic self-blame which often keeps people snagged, and to think about alternative ways of relating to themselves and others which opens up choices about where they might take their life in the future.

Psychotherapy, or counselling, offers a confidential, regular and supportive time and place to talk about your difficulties, concerns or questions in life. It allows you to examine your experiences and relationships, share your problems, develop your understanding of yourself, and consider your choices. It is somewhere for you to do your own thinking, with the support of a professional alongside you.

Hello there, I qualified to practice back in 2002, from here I worked full time as a Counsellor for an Alcohol service. I worked for ten years with clients where the presenting issue was alcohol misuse, however there were many other issues our clients struggled with, such as Depression, Anxiety, Low Self Esteem etc. I have extensive experience of successfully working with clients to make significant changes and to reach their goals. Since leaving this service, I have worked in a variety of therapeutic settings, gaining more and varied experience. I can help with most issues and usually without a need for long term therapy.

Everyone can be supported by counselling but taking that first step in finding help can be a dufficult one. I offer a non-judgemental, empathic safe place for you to share whatever you need to. The therapeutic relationship that you have with you counsellor is one of the most important aspect of therapy. This means that we will work together to build trust by going at your pace. Counselling gives you the opportunity to share yout thoughts and feelings with someone without the worry of feeling like a 'burden' on those who you are the closest to or worried about what they may think.

It can be daunting trying to find the right therapist, it takes a little courage but it can be very rewarding. I offer face to face or online therapy with both young and older adults from two safe and private locations in Bewdley and Worcester areas. Life can be very difficult and hard to manage at times, sometimes we find ourselves stuck not knowing where to turn. I help clients feel less anxious, increase their confidence, improve relationships and find emotional balance with increased assertiveness. I help with stress relief, the ability to set boundaries, find resolution to past trauma and help dealing with grief and loss.

I wonder what it feels like to find yourself here, looking for some kind of support? Maybe you are struggling to 'make sense' of what you've been experiencing in your life recently? Many of my clients inhabit a crowded yet empty world, in which they cannot easily 'hear' themselves, or feel that they are not 'understood' by those around them. Perhaps you feel a little like this too? My first hope as a counsellor is that working collaboratively you will feel both heard and understood - maybe for the first time. When this happens, we begin to develop the inner resources needed to discover and engage with who we truly are.

In a world where the ideal is to be a productive member of society, and speed is king, quick fixes are often the desired solution. However, I believe these rarely provide the conditions we need to meet the deep and often complex challenges that define us. I will use my experience as a trained open-ended therapist to ensure we have the time and space needed for you to feel fully met and witnessed where you are. As an integrative therapist I will be able to call on a number of therapeutic techniques to help tailor our work to best meet whatever has brought you to therapy.

Male Counsellors
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
