I believe strongly that good therapy is all about the relationship between the therapist and the client: its a unique thing and personal to each of us.
Good therapy is about change: changing reactions, behaviours, a difficult aspect of self, challenging attitudes/beliefs about yourself or your story. I love working with clients who are prepared to jump in, take risks and seek solutions - this is the way to ensure real change. I will jump in and risk too. I value being human and involved in the therapy and am also practically minded and view the best wisdom as something that can directly be applied to life. A supervisee recently described me as "real, relational, ordinary, practical and not floaty/wispy". I like to incorporate psychoeducation and relevant theoretical information.

Making sense of what is going on in your life is where counselling can help you and where a professional therapeutic relationship offering you an empathic and non-judgmental safe space to talk helps you to understand your feelings, heal and realize your potential.
It was Mr Miyagi in the movie “The Karate Kid” who said, “You know, but you do not understand.” We are often aware of the feelings and thoughts we are having, the behaviours they are causing and the distress that can generate. We can even know the traumas that have happened that we can attribute them to. But we can’t understand or articulate them enough to change them and heal. Perhaps this is the way you feel? Maybe you have been struggling with anxiety, depression or both for some time and everyday life is more challenging than you want it to be? Maybe you’ve experienced a traumatic event that you can’t seem to get over?

If you are experiencing emotions which you find difficult to manage alone, such as feeling low, feeling anxious, struggling with loss or facing difficulties with relationships, I would like to encourage you be curious and make an appointment and come to meet me.
Clients generally come to me when they are struggling with some aspect of their emotions, thoughts or behaviour. My aim is to help my client with accepting or changing some aspect of these three areas. Every client comes with unique issues and from my seat I view the issues as one, "a block in the road to wellness". I am keenly aware that all clients come with individual goals and I am here to help. Many of my clients use the phrase “I just want to feel better". This is my hope for everyone who engages with me in therapy. “TO FEEL BETTER” I offer confidentiality, openness and transparency at all times.

I know how overwhelming it can be when someone in a family is struggling, and it can be hard to know how to support them or find the right kind of help.
I have over 20 years of experience working in the NHS, specialising in child and adolescent mental health. This has allowed me to gain extensive experience in working with children, adolescents, young adults, siblings and parents to overcome a wide range of psychological, emotional and behavioural difficulties.

Perhaps you just want to talk with someone confidentially about some of the difficult things that have been on your mind.
I have a lot of respect for anyone who chooses to begin counselling. It takes courage to be open with someone, and I don't take that for granted. As an Integrative counsellor, I have a range of therapeutic tools to help towards a breakthrough, particularly for clients who live with anxiety, depression, or present difficulties relating to past traumas. As human beings, we are wired for survival, and continually adjust to protect ourselves from threats and challenges. As our circumstances change through life, we may notice that the patterns which once kept us safe are now holding us back.

My practice is for us to have a consultation period (at least two sessions) which also gives you the chance to think whether you feel comfortable working with me.
We all experience difficult and painful times in life which sometimes feel too hard or overwhelming to manage alone. I have trained and worked as a counsellor and latterly as a psychotherapist with over ten years of clinical experience in private practice, a local therapeutic institution, and as an honorary psychotherapist in the NHS. Depression, anxiety, stress, loss and separation are some of the more difficult issues we come up against in life which can seriously impact the way we live our lives. My approach is psychoanalytically oriented with a focus on increasing self understanding and deepening insight into emotional issues

Lets face it, sometimes life can get a bit much.
I work best with clients that are ready to make a commitment to change, and are ready to develop skills of self-reflection and compassion. Many of my clients have big questions about life and their place in it, as well as questions of who they are and what they want. Some clients don't really know what they want but know that something isn't quite right - that's ok too!

While our sessions are grounded in the present, they are inevitably influenced by our past, the challenges we've encountered, and the familial narratives or life scripts imposed upon us by influential figures.
Are you looking for an experienced, accredited therapist who will listen to you and meet you with a compassionate, down to earth approach? I extend a warm invitation to a confidential, trusting, therapeutic relationship, one where I will challenge you to look at yourself and your way of being, either as an individual or as a couple who need help communicating. Whatever it is that has brought you to this point, whether you are struggling with anxiety, grief, depression or relationships, together we can start to help you process this past experience and work on building your self awareness to help you make the right changes.

I know life can throw you a curve ball sometimes - shame, fear, embarrassment and confusion can prevent you from seeking a safe place to explore how to overcome issues which you are facing.
Silence can be difficult... its good to talk. I welcome you in a non-judgmental, safe space to express your fears, worries, and stresses, to disclose issues which may leave you unsure which way to turn. I would like to help you gain some clarity, and work towards effecting change. In the aftermath of significant life-altering events or shocks, counselling can offer you a structured avenue to unravel the complexities of your personal situation. You may have never experienced being truly yourself and voicing aloud what is causing you confusion and pain. Talking issues through with me can be a first step.

I recognise reaching out is a significant step.
Hi, I am a CBT Therapist (BABCP), Supervisor & EMDR Practitioner. Depression, Anxiety & PTSD can often lead people to feel stuck and lose their sense of self. I recognise when we feel like this we need to feel heard, have a way of making sense of what we are feeling and gain a sense of hope for the future. Through the therapeutic work I deliver using CBT and/or EMDR I hope to offer you just that. I will be alongside you, value and encourage your contributions, and aim to empower you to meet your goals. I have an adaptive style and would tailor the therapy to you. I strive to create a warm, non-judgemental, curious therapeutic space.

Seeking counselling and reaching out to a stranger for support can feel uncomfortable.
Sometimes in life we come across challenges that are too big to manage and cope with by ourselves. We can feel 'stuck' lost and isolated with our problems, unable to find a way forward. There could be a heavy weight of unhappiness and you are unable to pinpoint why. Past events could be affecting the way you are in the world today. Anxiety or depression may be holding you back from experiencing life and relationships in the way that you want to.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
