People come to therapy for many different and important reasons. For some it is to discuss difficult and emotional experiences, while for others its to have a space in their week to reflect and make time to check-in with themselves. I ask all my clients to come with an open-mind as therapy can take you on a journey of self-discovery. I have worked with many clients with varying degrees of personal difficulties; severe and mild distress including depression, anxiety, suicide, low-self-esteem, earlier life trauma, PTSD, relational difficulties and many more.

Life is overwhelming at times and it's just good to talk about what's going on. I like to work with you to find your own answers, to understand what is going on for you. We don't always know what we are thinking or feeling until we say it out loud. In order to do that you need to be able to trust who you are talking to. Nobody likes feeling judged or being told what to do!

I am an experienced psychotherapist specialising in an evidence-based therapy that accelerates psychological change. I help people to overcome whatever is preventing them from living fully and freely; addressing the issues they bring with compassion and integrity, in a collaborative, focused and emotionally therapeutic way. There are always reasons for suffering, and when we do not tackle this it tends to be repeated throughout our lives, often without understanding why. Therapy can be life-changing; bringing confidence, vitality, purpose, a realisation of potential, and more satisfying relationships.

I am professionally trained to work with survivors of sexual abuse.
We all go through life experiencing good and bad moments, but sometimes the bad experiences can become too overwhelming to manage them on our own. Sometimes they may be a result of sudden changes which life throws at us unexpectedly leaving us vulnerable and lost in a new reality and sometimes it may be that we want to change something in our lives, but don’t really know how, which leaves us feeling stuck and helpless. If this sounds familiar to how you feel why not try counselling? Talking to someone you can trust who can listen without any judgement can be very helpful especially in these challenging times.

I have experience supporting people with many issues including; sexual abuse, trauma, anxiety, change and loss, addiction and self confidence.
How are you? That's a question that gets asked a lot but it's often more of a statement, a greeting than an actual question. Most people don't even stop for the response and if they do, they're often too busy thinking about what they want to say, rather than listening to what's being said. It's no wonder then that we often stop asking ourselves that question too. If you're ready to stop and answer that question, then I'm here to listen and to hear what you have to say. Even if right now, you don't have the words, or you just don't know what to say... we can start with the question and go from there.

I support adults affected by low self esteem, anxiety, depression, or grief, often those who have experienced the death of a loved one, a major life transition or trauma, or childhood sexual abuse.

I know how tough life can be at times and how lonely it feels when no one seems to understand. If you’re wondering when you’ll feel happy or hopeful again, or you’re worrying about the future and fearing the worst, or maybe you’re struggling with a big change and a sense of who you are; I’d like to help. Being able to talk freely to someone, without fear of judgement or shame, can be a huge relief. Feeling seen and truly heard, and accepted for who you are is liberating.

It can be hard to reach out for professional support. Counselling Connection has designed its service to connect you to a small team of qualified therapists who may work in different ways but all have the same goal: to support you on your journey. If you don't "click" with the first counsellor you see, you are encouraged to meet with another member of our team so that you don't have to go back to square one in your search for a counsellor.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
