Everyone needs a little support from time to time. Perhaps you or someone you know feel that you ought to be able to manage your feelings, but are finding them too much at the moment. You may be feeling overwhelmed, sad, anxious, angry or confused. The de mands of work, relationships, families, financial worries, or caring for someone can all make it difficult to cope. You may have experienced loss through bereavement, redundancy, or retirement, or you might be struggling with your sense of identity, self-confidence, health, or direction in home life or at work. You may feel that you are struggling with some other unique issue.

Hi, I'm Barry Cook & much like yourself I found myself needing support many years ago when I went through a marital breakdown and was made homeless, I lost my confidence & had pushed many of my friends & family away I was struggling to focus on anything but my problems then counselling helped me to find balance once again.
Not knowing which way to turn or who you can talk to? Life feeling something like this overwhelming, relationships strained, broken down, lacking confidence & self-esteem, difficult to voice or understand what you need, feeling down on edge & simply confused? Then welcome to Barry Cook 'The Tattooed Counsellor' When we feel this way our problems may be all mixed up growing bigger or un manageable by the day. It could be that past or present experiences are causing us confusion & conflict. Maybe you would benefit from talking to someone who is not a part of your friends & family and will simply allow you to be you.

Hi, I am Max ( Qualified Person Centred Therapist) and I know from my own experience, that life can sometimes be a struggle. Events and experiences can leave us feeling lost, isolated or directionless . At such times, reaching out for help can feel very difficult and it is important that your search leads you to someone you feel you can trust . Counselling is an opportunity to explore thoughts and feelings ,which might be affecting many different areas of your life. With careful and empathic listening, I endeavour to support you in finding your own way through what is often too complex and difficult to manage alone.

Welcome. Everyone has times in life when their mental health is particularly challenging and they face emotional or psychological difficulties. If that describes you here and now, it can be helpful to seek support to become more aware of the impact of past life experiences, how those events still influence how you are in the world today and explore your thoughts and feelings around options for making changes in the future. Your issues, needs and goals could arise from your working life, personal life or a combination of both. You could be looking for more immediate help or seeking to better understand deeper, long-standing issues.

At times of feeling low or anxious we often think, “what’s the point of trying it won’t make any difference”, leading to feelings of depression, sadness, fear and tearfulness. This then leads to changes in our behaviour such as withdrawing from others or staying in bed as we mull things over in our heads which makes us feel worse. Additionally, past trauma issues can often leave us feeling overwhelmed or with experiences of flashbacks and nightmares. Relationship issues left unresolved often leave us with a sense of helplessness and relationship breakdown leave us feel confused. Does this sound familiar to you?

My clients have a variety of issues. I encourage my clients to have a sense of curiosity about themselves and their process in our work together. Throughout therapy, I seek to meet such needs as genuine understanding and acceptance as well as the provision of a space of safety when clients may be experiencing a life situation or condition that feels unsafe. These are all very normal hu man emotions.
Therapy offers an important step in discovering the world around us and finding our place in it. For some people, coming to therapy is a big step. It can take courage to identify a need to heal, recover or progress. My approach aims to ensure that you feel safe in the knowledge that you can trust the therapeutic process. Maintaining the core values of empathy, unconditional positive regard for you as well as congruence (being authentic), I also use other modes of therapy.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
