Hi, I'm Jo and thank you for taking the time to stop by my profile. So you've decided to take what feels like a scary yet very important step towards making a difference in your life and are looking for the right help with this - yes? Finding a safe, trustworthy and comfortable place is so important when it comes to therapy and I strive to offer this, either in my therapy room, via video link or over the phone, so that you can get help where ever you are. I'm trained in a variety of Counselling Theories so we can make the therapy fit you, rather than to try to fit you in to a 'therapy box' of one theory fits all.

Life can often feel challenging and even overwhelming at times. The therapeutic relationship between therapist and client, once formed is a safe, warm, non judgmental space that will allow the client to explore their worries and make sense of your feelings.

Welcome.. I provide a safe, confidential, professional, non-judgemental space for you to explore ways to self-support, bring awareness, compassion and understanding to the areas of life that have become challenging, overwhelming or traumatic. Counselling offers a container where movement and change can occur, where it's possible to find freedom and clarification around the things that weigh us down. I will work with you to identify the strategies and patterns that may restrict you living a fuller life, discover how they were formed, for what reasons and will support you to find ways to evolve and progress where change is possible.

Are you experiencing distress or dissatisfaction in your life no matter how hard you try? This may have been going on for a long time or perhaps you're left feeling out-of-control after a loved-one dying, a big change happening in your life, or maybe illness striking you or somebody that you care for? Perhaps nothing has happened, but you feel stuck and unhappy with your life and relationships? Are you exhausted taking care of others needs whilst ignoring your own? Whatever your situation you would like to find greater ease within yourself and have more satisfying relationships with other people in your life.

We all experience difficult and painful times in life which sometimes feel too hard or overwhelming to manage alone. I have trained and worked as a counsellor and latterly as a psychotherapist with over ten years of clinical experience in private practice, a local therapeutic institution, and as an honorary psychotherapist in the NHS. Depression, anxiety, stress, loss and separation are some of the more difficult issues we come up against in life which can seriously impact the way we live our lives. My approach is psychoanalytically oriented with a focus on increasing self understanding and deepening insight into emotional issues

I am a neurodivergent affirming practitioner who uses an integrative model of therapy. In a nutshell this means that my practice is influenced by a variety of therapeutic approaches, this enables me to create a ‘tailor made’ approach for each individual. Influenced by my own experience as a late identified autistic person and parent to a neurodivergent child I am drawn to working with neurodiverse people or individuals who have neurodiverse loved ones.

I specialise in the psychotherapeutic support of the parents and carers of neurodiverse children / young people pre and post diagnosis, in particular the support of the parents of autistic girls. As well as having lived experience of autism parenting, I have written and researched extensively around the lived experiences of the parents of autistic girls. The support that I offer encompasses both parental mental wellbeing and offering advice and guidance, whether from first suspicions that your child might be autistic, through the journey to diagnosis, with life in-between and beyond.

Counselling can seem a challenge if you have never sought this kind of help before, but my aim at the outset is to provide the beginnings of a therapeutic relationship which can open the door to an exploration of experience of the past, as well as the present. The aim of therapy can be specific, or obscure, but together we will work towards an achievable goal. I work intuitively, but with firm boundaries which keep us both safe within a very special relationship. Therapy can be long term, or short term, but it is the client who decides what number of sessions is going to be most beneficial.

ADHD does not come with a user manual. The growing recognition of ADHD among adults has left many feeling helpless, yet with a strong desire for change. I support adults, whether formally diagnosed or not, to understand themselves, identify strengths and needs, and pursue fulfilling lives.

My work as a therapist is based on the belief that change is possible. I believe that counselling can change lives. Life throws challenges at all of us and sometimes these can feel overwhelming. The process of counselling gives you space to examine and understand issues. You may be feeling stuck in unhealthy behaviours and patterns of thinking. It is sometimes too hard to speak with close relatives or friends and so talking to an independent person can bring objectivity and non-judgement. The process of counselling brings awareness and without awareness, we cannot change.

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
