I have worked with a range of clients in my nursing career within mental health services, as a stress management and mental health trainer and a psychotherapist.
People come to therapy for many reasons. It may be that they are feeling stressed, anxious or depressed and they are having difficulty coping. Sometimes people just want to explore how their past continues to influence their present. Therapy can help us understand ourselves more, engage with ourselves and others more positively and move on in our lives. I believe in the core principles of Transactional Analysis that: People are OK; Everyone has the capacity to think; and People decide their own destiny and these decisions can be changed.

You’re probably reading this because you know quite a bit about ADHD and you're wondering whether it could explain some of your characteristics, or those of your child. You want a great value, gold standard ADHD assessment to help you understand whether ADHD is the answer. And you don't want to have to sit on a waiting list for years to get it. If you receive a diagnosis, you want a comprehensive, personalised report and a full range of follow-up options, including strategies and techniques as well as the possibility of a referral to specialists to consider medication.

I believe in a whole-person approach to psychotherapy that equally values all aspects of the Hu man experience – body, feeling, mind, soul and spirit.
Hello - I'm Michael Blades, an Integrative, Relational Psychotherapist and full member of the UCKP and member of the BACP (MBACP). I understand how life can leave a lasting impression on how we come to think and feel about ourselves as adults. Psychotherapy can help you change your sense of self and your relationships with others and the world. I often work with motivated and courageous clients who realise they are not just the stories they have come to believe about themselves - and, in time, reconnect with a more profound sense of who they are and have meaning in their lives.

Whatever it is that brings you to counselling, I will help you to bring about the change you are wanting to achieve. You may have a personal goal in mind, or you may not know exactly what it is you need from counselling yet. You may be struggling with life at the moment and finding it hard to see a way forward. You may feel lost and not have a good sense of who you are any more. You may have a long term condition that you need help with or you may have had a recent bereavement, separation or other traumatic life event. Maybe things just don't feel right. Whatever it is you need and wherever you need to get to, I am here to help you.

Therapy can be for those looking to learn more about themselves or to work through a difficult memory, and not necessarily only for those in crisis. Sitting down with someone for a personal conversation rarely comes with no strings attached. That’s what I can offer; a safe space to speak your mind, without the fear of judgement that naturally comes from people who have a personal stake in your life.

Let’s face it, life can be hard. To tackle the challenges we endure day-to-day, it’s essential to build a good psychological foundation and increase our fortitude. Without a balanced lifestyle our bodies and minds become less resilient. Are you struggling to move forward? My life philosophy is simple – be consistent and things will change for you. Work with me if you want to create healthier habits/behaviours and relinquish old beliefs that have weighed you down.

If you are on this page, it probably means you are a feeling a little stuck and could do with someone to trust, not judge you and listen to you. I can do that. What makes me different, I’ve been there. I’m not going to write paragraphs about me because this is about you. If you’d like to know more about me, please visit my site ww.allanclayton.co.uk “When I stand at the foot of a mountain, I can very rarely see the summit. Hi all, I am a qualified Integrative Couples Psychotherapist/Counsellor (meaning I work using Person Centred, Psychodynamic and/or CBT where required). Although, I believe that the skills and experience that I have learned are massively important, I also truly believe the 'therapeutic relationship' between me and you is just as important. People often seek counselling for a number of reasons, whether they are feeling low, want to offload or it may be something that is deeper. We will work together to see if it is something surface level or whether it is deeper and use the relevant therapy accordingly.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
