Do you feel stuck in a way of living which is becoming increasingly painful to sustain? Has your 'true self' gone missing? Is your sense of self overly influenced by opinions of others? Does your past cast long shadows on your present? Does your future feel more scary than exciting? Does your life lack meaning and purpose? If any of this resonates with you, my existential approach to therapy will provide you with a safe place in which to explore and process any trauma in your past; pain in the present and anxiety about the future. Helping to bring the 'real you' out of hiding and find a more joyful and authentic way of living.

Coming to counselling is often the first step in your journey for positive change. There are different ways we can approach sessions; from different approaches to therapy and finding a way that is right for you. Everyone is different and therefore, with my pluralistic approach, we can explore different ways that are right by you, guided by how you are each session.

We can all at some time in our lives experience times which can create confusion surrounding the path you are on. Counselling offers a safe, confidential space where we can together bring understanding to what may be influencing your thoughts, feelings and behaviours and enable you to take charge again and move forward.

People who contact me have difficulties dealing with anxious thoughts, physical distress, and traumatic memories. They want to develop a healthier relationship with their psychological experiences so they can focus on what truly matters in their lives. Through our therapeutic work together, we will explore evidence-based strategies to understand our thought processes, overcome anxiety, re-appraise trauma, and try to accept the inevitable in life. I do not work with individuals who have imminent risks.

Making the decision to be in therapy can be life-changing. It is important to be able to express ourselves in a non-judgmental, safe, open, and confidential environment. I have been working for many years with people who come to me to talk about a variety of issues. All of these conversations highlight people's desire to improve their quality of life, whether by becoming more confident, finding direction or purpose in life, improving relationships, changing unhelpful behaviours, feeling happier, or developing new skills in life.

Seeking change in your life can feel daunting, but many people come to therapy because they want exactly that. If we work together, we will spend time exploring what life is like for you now, identify the change we want to make and together we plan how we can move from where we are to where we want to be. I'm able to draw on a wide range of therapeutic skills to help support you through whatever difficulty you might be facing to make life more manageable.

Hi. I am dedicated to helping people develop a better understanding of their true selves and consequently the way they approach relationships and life events. When life brings uncomfortable and sometimes unbearable emotions, it can be easier to run or hide from them. This may work in the short-term, but is often not a sustainable approach for a happy and healthy life. By working together, we can make sense of your thoughts and feelings, leading to better emotional and mental wellbeing. All ranges of emotions are welcome and can be explored in a safe, supportive, non-judgemental manner, helping you gain insight into your inner world.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
