Hi, how are you? Are you feeling stressed, perhaps a little depressed/low mood, or suffering with low self esteem, fear or issues such as anxiety ( including generalised anxiety disorder) anger? Panic attacks, self-harming, it might be that life has been just difficult to manage: relationships, childhood trauma, bereavement. If any of this sounds familiar, I might be able to help.

I imagine if you have come this far, there is something causing you distress. This may be related to overwhelming emotions, anxiety, relational difficulties or reoccurring and intrusive memories which continue to traumatize you. Perhaps you have experienced a significant loss or bereavement in your life and you seem unable to move on from painful grief and fears of abandonment. Maybe your early life was fraught with absent, inconsistent, frightening or abusive parenting, leading to low self esteem. You may also be aware of how this impacts on your ability to trust and reach out for care, or a constant need to be around others.

Has something turned your world upside down? Do you feel lost? It’s common for everyone to experience bumps in the road of life; but what happens when you just don’t know how to deal with those bumps? Perhaps you talk to family, friends or colleagues, maybe you just keep it all in, cross your fingers and hope for the best. Talking things over is known to help, especially when you are really listened to by someone who doesn’t judge you or tell you what to do, all in confidence. You might not realise it yet, but you are the expert on your own life and counselling can give you the keys to unlock that expertise.

There are a variety of reasons why people come to counselling or psychotherapy. We all throughout our lives face difficult and challenging times and for some having additional support is all that is needed. I offer a safe place for you to unburden those concerns, voice your fears, anger, or frustration, at your own pace in a confidential, non-judgemental, and relaxed environment. My aim is to help you make sense of your feelings and help you move on in your life. The thought of having therapy can feel a bit daunting at first, fear of the unknown, but it is the first step to moving forward on your journey. One step at a time!

What can I do to help myself?Just having someone who you trust to talk it over with , someone who will listen , Not judge you is all you might need to offload .To be able to talk openly about everything that has either happened or is happening can be a welcome release.

Self-Harming Counsellors

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
