Whether you're facing a crisis, aiming to improve your quality of life, or simply seeking a deeper understanding of yourself, therapy can help you navigate the experience. As a psychodynamic psychotherapist my therapeutic approach centres on exploring the unconscious and often overlooked processes that influence our thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Together, we'll work to uncover patterns in your life and to build an understanding of the interplay between your past experiences and current struggles.

Sometimes our coping strategies and the way we relate to others may become problematic. Relationships may have broken down, you may be suffering from anxiety, depression or low self esteem. You may feel stuck and can't find a way forward. You may have lost someone close to you or something that was really important to you. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy can offer the opportunity to begin to make sense of what underlies your difficulties, come to terms with your losses and discover new perspectives. I help you make links between what you are doing in the here and now and the way you experience your life and the people within it.

If your lacking self confidence, want to explore why and booster your view of yourself I'd love to be able to help do that. Perhaps your automatic reaction is to say yes to people and give too much of yourself away so that you don't have enough energy, compassion or time for yourself and your loved loves and you want to be able to say yes on your own terms.

You have already made a brave and important step on the journey to well-being and self-discovery, by enquiring about having therapy. As a Clinical Psychologist, I am passionate about helping people to realise the values, knowledge, and skills that they already hold, and how the awareness of this can enable them to live full, vibrant and satisfying lives. I believe that it is important to learn skills to help people cope with the present and the future, as well as making sense of past experiences to understand patterns that are happening in your life currently.

I work with new parents, women suffering pre and post natal depression, those with long term health conditions, depression, anxiety, grief and self-esteem.
I work hard to create a space in therapy that fits your needs and takes account of who you are as an individual and what life stage you may be at. I am a warm, honest and creative individual who believes that the trusting relationship you build with a therapist is the biggest factor in the outcome. I have worked in an NHS setting, in a counselling service and in schools and am now bringing that experience to my clients in private practice. Coming to this career a little later in life I believe I bring a great deal of life experience to my role and that helps inform my work with my clients.

There are many reasons why people experience emotional challenges, upsets, or dissatisfaction. It could be due to feeling overwhelmed by situations out of our control, being trapped in unproductive patterns or unsatisfying relationships, or simply feeling that things are not quite right in life. Whether you are faced with an emotional storm or a sense of stagnation, therapy provides a safe space for exploring your situation and building resources for moving forward. Through the therapy process, people get to know themselves better, which then guides them in making meaningful choices long after the work has ended.

I offer a safe and confidential space where together we can explore your difficulties and help you get a deeper understanding of your inner self. In my approach I concentrate on both the past and the present: on how our past and unconscious feelings influence our current thinking and behaviour. I believe in the uniqueness of every individual, with their own life experiences that shaped them into the person they are. I also believe in the importance of creating a trusting and supportive therapeutic relationship where you can feel safe to share and explore whatever is worrying you.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
