I use a flexible approach which is informed by, and draws upon a range of therapeutic models including; Trauma Focused Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Person Centred Therapy, and Psychosexual Therapy.
Most people experience difficulties at some stage of their life, such as overwhelming distress, feeling of ‘stuckness’ or lack of meaningfulness. Thoughts and feelings can be difficult to identify alone and come to terms with alone. Talking to a therapist in a confidential and supportive environment is a space to understand and address your difficulties. My view is that the role of the therapist is to explore with the client their core beliefs, in order to identify their feelings of ‘stuckness’ and relationship patterns.

Welcome! I’m Tom and I’m a qualified psychotherapist with over twenty-five years’ experience of working in the caring professions. Life can be hard at the best of times and we all experience periods when we feel anxious, sad or overwhelmed. Sometimes we need to give ourselves the chance to take stock and work out who we are and where we want to go. I’m here to support you with that, to help you take that next step forwards. My philosophy is informed by my beliefs in people's capacity for change, in their resilience, and in their ability to find the answers for that feel right for them - to make their change.

I work with a range of clients from different backgrounds and with a variety of presentations. Most of my work is with adults experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, burnout, trauma, and identity and relational difficulties. These may show up as intra or interpersonal difficulties, shame, fear or anxieties around health, performance and confidence, self-esteem and worth, and within social and relational contexts. I provide an open, non-judgemental, validating and conversational space that encourages curiosity, learning and growth, intrinsically and relationally.

We believe that everyone is unique and therefore is dealt with in a way that best caters to his or her individual needs. We work with you by exploring your world to see how you engage with your life and the people around you. Along the journey, we will explore your past, look at your present and see how you perceive the future. We will help you become more aware of your values, beliefs and limitations and help you connect and improve your relationship with yourself. This process may be challenging, yet extremely rewarding as we access the changes you want to make towards living the life that you want to live.

I use EMDR to help people process trauma (PTSD and C-PTSD). My clients are typically living with a range of issues - flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, night terrors, palpitations, catastrophising, insomnia, feelings of isolation, irritability and guilt. They also very often experience 'triggering' - making everyday life, work and relationships difficult. Additionally, they may not remember aspects of what has happened to them and others ('dissociation'.) People come to me for EMDR to enable them to reduce the disturbance levels in their nervous systems and hence, get on with their lives.

I work with couples in crisis wanting to re-establish an emotional connection with each other, or perhaps repair and re-establish trust after an affair. I also work with individuals experiencing high levels of anxiety and stress in their lives, relationship difficulties, or feelings of depression, isolation and meaninglessness, as well as people recovering from traumatic events or losses. I have a specialism in working with cross-cultural couples and expats (abroad and in the UK); I also have first-hand experience, being part of a cross-cultural family and having lived half of my life away from my country of birth.

Being human, it is only natural we are continuously faced with life's numerous challenges. Painful emotions, such as fear, sadness, grief, frustration, anger and many more show up in response to life's challenges and we have all been 'well-trained' to go for 'fixing' or 'controlling' these responses in the quickest way possible. Ironically, it is this urge to control such painful internal experiences, that often creates and in fact exacerbates our struggles! I am here to help you gain new skills to manage difficult internal experiences in a more helpful manner so you can start living your life more fully.

I offer a space for peace and reflection, helping to understand how the way we react to what life throws at us can make things even harder. I offer individual counselling using Mindfulness-based Therapy, combining Western approaches to psychotherapy with the wisdom and awareness of Buddhism. You may feel anxious, or depressed, you may be affected by psychosexual issues, by grief and bereavement, living with illness, especially HIV/AIDS, or caring for a loved one with a mental health problem. You may be going through problems coming from your multicultural background, having identity issues and trouble at reintegration.

My practice is for those who want to deepen their relationship with themselves and honour their soul's wisdom. Many struggle with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and intrusive thoughts, feeling trapped and unable to move forward with a life of meaning and purpose. I understand these struggles, having faced them myself. With no guidance available, I embarked on a personal journey of self-discovery to change this. Over 10 years of study, retreats, and consistent effort, I learned that healing isn’t just about moving from 'A' - 'B.' It’s about becoming aware of and accepting your reality, then using it as a catalyst for change.

Are you living with higher levels of anxiety than those around you would’ve guessed? Pouring over moves you make, wishing you said or did things differently? Are you worrying at nighttime, despite all your best efforts not to? When our internal alarm system gets activated and the button to turn it off seems to have gone missing, it has a way of taking over every area of our life. I'm guessing that if you're reading this you've probably tried many ways to control the way you're feeling. It can be a frustrating experience not to gain control over it, perhaps especially so, if you’re used to succeed in other areas of your life.
