'Helping Young People realise their full potential' and with the pandemic still affecting educational, social and family dynamics, 'Helping Young People adapt positively to change' With over 15 years experience counselling young people in private practice, schools and colleges. I have successfully worked on anxiety prevention, family dynamics, dyspraxia, autism, self harming behaviours, sexuality and gender, exam pressure, bullying, OCD and many more. I don't believe that there is one method of psychotherapy that suits everyone. I believe in adapting my way of working for each client I meet. You may feel that you want to work short-term on a specific aspect of your life. You may feel that you want to take time to look back on your early life experiences or you may not know where to start or where you are going. Whatever your situation is, I will do my best to see the world as you do and, where possible, offer you an alternative perspective. I believe the same is true for children and using sand tray and art materials I allow children to process their emotions through play.

It can be daunting when we start addressing things that are painful and open up parts of our self which don't often, or ever, get expressed. I believe everyone has the right to be heard and accepted, so aim to create a space for this to flourish, whilst using the strength of the therapeutic relationship. Whatever has brought you to me, I aim to meet you where you are, help you gain deeper insight to yourself, and facilitate meaningful change.

I am a qualified Psychodynamic counsellor. My training and personal experience have led me to believe people are connected with and influenced by society, cultures, and so on. By forming a safe and trusting relationship in therapy, we can see how past and existing connections unknowingly impact you and gain a deeper insight into your problems and a greater awareness of your own self and your way of relating. Discovering self can be scary and I strive to follow you at your own pace. Being a queer woman and a therapist with an ethnic minority background have deepened my understanding of isolation and marginalisation.

Beginning therapy and finding a therapist can be a daunting process, although just taking the first step of reaching out to one is the most courageous step. I offer a confidential safe space - either in person on online - to talk about your concerns or anything which is currently troubling you at the same time and day each week. The regularity of sessions and the relationship between client and therapist which develops is part of the journey of healing that therapy can provide. I am a fully qualified and accredited psychotherapist with experience of working with people to help them heal and feel better about themselves.

Self-Harming Counsellors

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
