In my practice, I work in a way that gives patients the space to speak freely and to express what they’re thinking, feeling, and experiencing, in a completely confidential setting. The therapeutic alliance encourages the exploration of the self by focusing on the unconscious mind. The therapist-patient relationship is at the core of the therapeutic experience. Sessions are led by the patient’s ‘free association’, which simply means that, whatever you bring to a particular session, is what we work with. You might bring a memory, a feeling or a passing thought, continue our discussion from a previous session, or bring something new.

I have worked as a psychotherapist for over 25 years in the NHS, voluntary sector and privately. I trained as a Freudian psychoanalyst having worked in the mental health charity sector for some years. I like to work with a range of people, usually on a once weekly or more frequent basis. I work with people who are seeking to understand themselves better - their relationships with others as well as with themselves. I hope that I can help them make sense of difficulties or challenges in their lives in order to live more fully and creatively.

Our health and wellbeing come from having meaningful and satisfying relationships with others and ourselves, and from being able to come to terms with what is going on in our lives. By understanding and uncovering what is causing us distress, and by getting to know ourselves better, we can feel more empowered and in control of our lives. I really believe that paying attention to our unconscious and being curious about ourselves and our inner lives can help us achieve a more balanced and integrated sense of self.

I work using a variety of therapy models, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and person-centred approaches. We will work together to form a safe space in which we can explore your issues and try to help you find a way out of your current difficulties. I view ourselves as constant works-in-progress and understand that sometimes we become stuck in life and unable to find ways forwards. We will work together to discover which approach or approaches best suit you in order to help you become unstuck from your current situation.

We are all influenced by the people in our lives and the experiences we have had both past and present, all of which serve to shape and define us. Sometimes we need help in understanding how the culmination of these factors can get in the way of being able to live life fully and with ease. Maybe you're looking for relief from the pain of anxiety or depression. You could be struggling with life changes or loss. You may want a better relationship with yourself and/or those closest to you. I offer a non-judgemental space in which I can help you to explore your feelings, beliefs and patterns of behaviour.

Therapy can help us to manage our lives and our relationships better, it can lead to more fulfilling relationships and a renewed sense of aliveness. Learning how to manage symptoms such as overthinking, insomnia, anxiety, depression, lack of energy, or an enduring sense of helplessness and despair, can lead to renewed energy and a greater sense of freedom in our lives. In my sessions I often use teaching, in order to help make sense of and understand why you might be feeling the way you do and to help you learn ways to make changes in order to better manage those feelings.

A therapeutic space can give us the understanding and confidence we need to make positive changes in our life. Expressing unspoken thoughts and feelings is an opportunity to heal, walk light and recover a feeling of direction. It gives us perspective and open our minds to explore healthier ways of relating to ourselves. My name is Alvaro, I'm a trauma informed Psychologist with more than 10 years of experience. I practice in Thanet (Margate and Ramsgate) and London.

Is there something going on for you right now that you are not sure how to explain? Feel a sense of being lost, worried, sad, scared, angry or anxious but not sure why? Life can be difficult and counselling can help you explore what is going on. I believe we can work together and start to unpick issues and begin to understand them, improve communication, increase self-confidence and feel more empowered. I work with adults, couples and young people and love seeing a person walk away more relaxed, and in a better place. Counselling is all about you and finding your own answers.

We all have aims and ambitions for ourselves but life events can often leave us barely able to cope, facing anxious or depressive thoughts daily. Are you struggling with certain traits of ADHD and you could use some useful steps to help you manage better? Have you wondered just how you may have learned to cope through your childhood with adverse events that have shaped the way you see yourself in the world? Are you struggling with issues that make it hard to feel like you’re prospering, enjoying life and applying yourself fully in relationships, feeling fulfilled at work and in free time? Counselling and therapy can help.

Are you finding your marriage or relationship to be really hard right now? Is it full of tension, disappointment or heartache? Perhaps you are arguing more and you just don't look forward to spending time with your partner anymore. Do you wish you could feel the way you felt about them when you first decided to make a commitment to each other? I'm guessing you want to feel seen and heard, like you matter and like your thoughts and feelings matter, too. You don't just want to be going through the motions of being close, but want something that feels special and secure.
