Most people experience difficulties at some stage of their life, such as overwhelming distress, feeling of ‘stuckness’ or lack of meaningfulness. Thoughts and feelings can be difficult to identify alone and come to terms with alone. Talking to a therapist in a confidential and supportive environment is a space to understand and address your difficulties. My view is that the role of the therapist is to explore with the client their core beliefs, in order to identify their feelings of ‘stuckness’ and relationship patterns.

My name is Dr Tanya McDonnaugh and I am an HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist (DClinPsy). Being human can be a wonderful experience, full of joy and connection, but it can also be overwhelming, bewildering, and exhausting. I am experienced at assessing, and treating most psychological, emotional, behavioural and relationship difficulties, big and small. You might be struggling with a specific problem like anxiety or low mood, or maybe you just have a sense that you aren't functioning at your best. Perhaps you have noticed difficulties in relationships, with your self-esteem, or in your ability to manage your emotions.

Feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, anxious, worn out, depressed and stressed are just some of the many ways we might react to what is happening around us and within us. Looking for help is not a sign of defeat, not now and not ever; it should be seen as one of many ways we can look after ourselves in these trying times. If you think talking might help you to process what you are going through, then please, get in touch. During our sessions I aim to provide a safe, supportive and non-judgemental space for you to explore your issues.

If you are feeling stuck – unsure, overwhelmed or confused about the choices you have made, and your life right now, therapy can help. Give yourself space, to breathe, slow down and explore what patterns might be in operation out of awareness. You may be feeling that you are surviving, not thriving and that life is difficult to navigate. Sometimes painful experiences from the past can get in the way of fully responding to what happens in the present. Working together we will explore how you make sense of the world you are in and let go of what might be keeping you stuck and holding you back.

You may already have a sense of what psychotherapy will be like, or you may not. Either way, choosing a therapist can be difficult. You can contact me by email, voicemail or text, and I will contact you to arrange an initial consultation meeting. During the consultation, we will reflect together on what has led you to seek therapy at this time and think about the outcomes you are hoping for. This will also be a chance for us to meet and to think about whether you may find therapy helpful.

Not accepting new clients
I began as an anthropologist, seeking to understand other people's cultures from their own perspectives. Then my desire changed to facilitating direct positive shifts in other people's lives; lives spoilt by trauma, depression, anxiety, abuse, persecuted sexuality and lack of life direction. My work is now with private clients across anxiety and mood problems - generalized anxiety, OCD, PTSD, psychosexual problems and depression. I also work in depth on relationship problems which often link with anxiety. In Islington Mind I worked with LGBT clients including asylum seekers persecuted for their sexuality.

As an integratively trained counselling psychologist I am trained in several different therapeutic approaches. While I predominantly offer Cognitive Behavioural Therapies, which are typically more skills-based and solution-focused, I also draw from other approaches where these feel helpful, depending on your individual needs. CBT can be helpful in addressing a number of different issues, and is often recommended for individuals suffering from anxiety, low-mood or other mood-related difficulties.
